Hairdressers - and getting a Dyson or Shark styler

This is probably a rant rather than a query...

Does anyone find that hairdressers are all a bit..they do what they fancy? And does anyone have hair that has it's own personality?!

On point 1, my hairdresser retired about 5 years ago. Since then, I really struggle to find a hairdresser to do a square layer from the top of the crown. That was a wash and go hairdo for me, about shoulder length. Hair is thick so needs a bit of weight taken out.

Some hairdressers google "square layer" when I ask them. I thought perhaps it is called something else now but then I went to Toni and Guy and they said it's a well known term.

So had hair done with them...they said they were doing the square layer but it didn't look quite right.

When it grows out, I now end up with triangular hair. I think this means they haven't cut some of the underneath parts properly? I always ask for a blunt straight line and check it.

On point 2, I appreciate my hair is like a separate entity. Some days it wants to be straight, others curly. It's very thick and maybe hard to cut?

Haircuts have increased in price so much, I am now thinking to just have it longer, cut it less often and maybe get a Dyson or Shark styler and see if I can just work with it that way instead of relying on a cut.

Does this seem like a good idea? I just don't understand how so many hairdressers seem to have done a completely different cut with the same instruction.

My theory (based on bitter experience) is that the hairdresser will give you roughly what they have, or will understand what you want if they have the same style. So if you want a pixie cut, find a hairdresser with this style. Otherwise I take photos, or have pictures of what I want rather than using hairdressing terms - I find this works better.

Yes, cuts are more expensive. I get mine done every 10-12 weeks and it is cut and styled accordingly.

I'm really curious about what a square layer is, OP!

Thanks

I got my hairdresser to take photos before she retired, makes no difference.

the layer is subtle, it's to take weight out, so I often find they peer at the picture and say "do you want a layer?"

i just googled MN threads about haircuts and "doing what they fancy" seems a common problem.

I'm really curious about what a square layer is, OP!

There's load of videos but all the ones I found are really overdoing the layering so I didn't show anyone that.

If you look at the basic principle, my old HD used to do a little of that over the top layers of hair, then it blended in with the full length and didn't look layered from a short glance.

The best job was done by a junior for £30. She looked at the photos carefully and found some similar things from her portfolio. It took her quite a while but she checked everything very carefully.

But 8 weeks later, it needs cutting again. Are different bits of my hair growing at different rates?

I'm happy to go to her again as it looked nice for about a month. I hope she's still there.

But I think it might be time to see if styling it is any help and can extend time between cuts.
