i have so many and i struggle on places to wear them, everyone at work (office) wears casual and going out people are just as casual. is there any point in dresses?

i feel really conspicuous when i wear them now.

I wear dresses to.work 90 percent of the time.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 10/12/2023 22:05

I wear dresses a lot, mainly at work (they're not compulsory but equally it's not the sort of place where you'd be considered overdressed in one) but sometimes in my spare time too. I like midi length waisted dresses or slightly shorter cocoon dresses.

MinervatheGreat · 10/12/2023 22:10

Always out to lunch or dinner.
Love dresses. Add plenty of bling.

Don’t care if I stand out in the crowd or look “over dressed.” I just like the feeling of looking more feminine for a change and (a bit) chic.

Birdcar · 10/12/2023 22:50

I rarely see people in dresses these days. I don't wear them myself anymore because I always feel over dressed in them.

halfpasteleven · 11/12/2023 07:30

I do wear them (to work or if heading out) - I love how "handy" it is to get dressed when it's a dress I'm wearing.
No mixing and matching and there's a style to fit all shapes and heights.
I always plan my work outfit the night before and a dress saves me time getting ready too

I also keep what l would term as a “retired sun dress” on a hook on the back of my bedroom door. More functional than a dressing gown when an “express slip on” is required.

Some time ago in a newly washed but unbelted dressing gown, I accidentally flashed the lot to the postman. 😂

I always wear a dress on nights out get some nice boots

nothingsforgotten · 20/04/2024 22:46

In summer I put on a linen dress when I get up and get on with my day (mostly retired). I don't think I look less casual than anyone else. On the odd day I do go into work I wear the same dresses, and the others in the office also wear casual dresses.

dudsville · 21/04/2024 07:16

I worried about standing out when I first took to wearing dresses. Then there was a trend a few years ago for the long ditsy floral dresses and a few people at work adopted that, so i didn't feel so alone in dresses. That ebbed but I've now got used to my dresses. Where I feel the most overdressed nowadays is at home, but I love wearing them so much I just don't care. I'm hardly as fancy a Dolly Parton and I recently saw a clip of her talking about how she wanted to dress when she was growing up. Let's have fun with our clothes if we want to, and not worry whether it matches the look of those around us.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/04/2024 07:28

What are your dresses like that you think you'll stand out? I'm fundraising in my town today wearing a button down the front black cotton dress with pumps and a cardigan. I won't stand out. I regularly do the school run in high street cotton summer dresses, no one notices. If I go out for dinner with friends , even if they wear "jeans and a nice top" I wear a dress, they'll tell me it looks nice but no one in the restaurant notices.

Are all your dresses very fitted and sexy or very fancy and blingey?

EventuallyDecluttered · 21/04/2024 07:35

I wear them all summer from as soon as it's warm enough for bare legs (virtually never in winter though as I hate tights, if anything I wear a stretchy black skirt over black leggings). Casual, smarter, there are dresses for all occasions.

pagansophie · 10/12/2023 12:30

If you wear dresses at home what do you wear on your feet?

Tights in winter and nothing in the summer.

LittleBearPad · 21/04/2024 07:39

I wear dresses most of the time

Hopingforno2in2024 · 21/04/2024 07:40

I wear mine as normal day to day clothes. If you like them don’t worry about what others are wearing. It is always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed anyway.

willowstar · 21/04/2024 07:44

I wear dresses 100% of the time at work. I work in NHS senior management and if not in uniform, many women wear dresses, though not all of course. I like to feel different at work to how I feel at home so I dress to go to work. At home I wear jeans, cords, jumpsuits etc...though I have some dresses for going out too.

AuntieMarys · 21/04/2024 07:48

I've worn one once in 25 years and that was to get married. I'd have been happy in Levis! I don't wear skirts either as I feel ridiculous.

shivbo2014 · 21/04/2024 07:59

I love a dress, wear them to work and on weekends. I have an unhealthy obsession with Sugarhill Brighton dresses at the moment.

vincettenoir · 21/04/2024 08:13

I wear midi dresses a lot in Spring / Summer. I would usually be wearing them by now but alas, still in jeans and jumpers.

bananaboats · 21/04/2024 11:57

I wear dresses all the time. I have some leggings for round the house but I don't own any jeans or trousers. I wouldn't say I look any dressier than anyone else & I see plenty of people wearing them out & about

hopscotcher · 21/04/2024 12:02

At my workplace a lot of women wear dresses, although the general style is still 'smart casual' rather than formal. I sometimes wish I had more opportunities to wear my fancier dresses!

Chillilounger · 25/04/2024 06:36

I wear them everyday in summer and prob once a week in the other seasons due to owning less thicker dresses.

lifebeginz · 25/04/2024 10:11

I love dresses. I find them so much more comfortable than jeans and stuff and easier (not having to match separates) I practically live in them in Spring Summer (but not through A/W as I don't have many suitable for that season) I wear them to work, shopping, in the garden, doing housework etc etc

Bitzi · 25/04/2024 10:33

If you feel that a dress is too formal or you might feel overdressed, then you can "dial down" a lot of dresses with your choice of footwear, jacket, accessories etc. Casual jacket, casual boots/flipflops, casual handbag... now you're dressed down.

It always seems odd to me that dresses are often seen as more formal and high effort, when actually for me even the smart-looking ones tend to be more comfy (loose waistband) and low effort (no problem choosing co-ordinates) than separates!

Divebar2021 · 25/04/2024 10:38

I’m not a huge wearer of dresses but I wore a long navy cotton dress yesterday layered over a t shirt and leggings with multicoloured chunky trainers. It looked good. I’m trying to wear more of my wardrobe and if I saved it for a warm day it might never get worn.
