Is being called glamorous a compliment?

I'm asking because I am not taking it as one.

I've been told quite a few times that I am glamorous, or I look glamorous, but I don't know if I particularly like it as a compliment.

To me, the word makes me think of someone on Ru Pauls drag show, where they get all done up and then look like Joan Collins at an Oil Barons Ball. It makes me conscious that I have over done it with fake everything.

I don't think I am glamorous. In fact I spend 90% of my time in jeans and trainers with a bit of mascara. When I do have to get done up, I think it is still quite low key. I don't have boobs or legs on show, I don't wear a lot of makeup, I don't have big 80's hair and I don't wear a lot of jewellery, just some simple small diamond studs.

I went to a wedding and a few people said it to me, then at work, then at a party.

I'm just interested to hear what others think and if they think it is a compliment, and I should be happy to receive it instead of looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Also i am small .. so my hair looks big in ratio to my body .
i always always wear lipstick as due to my coluring have v v pale lips and loo ill .. so lips n hair means people think that .

Yes, me too. My face and hair look big compared to my body - I can look lollipop if not too careful.

I’m only 5 ft 3 which is unusual for a soft dramatic as they are usually 5 foot 6 and a above but I look a lot taller than I am as very long legged compared to my very short torso.

Notoldeeally · 10/12/2023 11:04

Thats intresting .. I dont have ‘ good ‘ clothes or bags tho as associated with glamour tho .

i wear a mixture of jump suits , true vintage , cashmere .. heavy boots.
but never wear things like hiking boots or raincoat s exept for hiking . .. even in our local beach I would choose dresses , wellys, cashmere cardi.. it is not about looks for others uts just what attracts me ..

Notoldeeally · 10/12/2023 11:05

JMAngel1 you v sound similar . Am below 5 2 !
but i have long torso and short legs ..!

Gingerboy22 · 10/12/2023 11:08

@Notoldeeally that's the thing though - as this thread shows different people have different ideas of what glamorous is.

napody · 10/12/2023 13:36

Im sure its a compliment if you're generally casual and have a 50s look about you.

It's reminded me of that bit in Normal People where the bitchy girl says 'marianne...you've certainly gone all out'. And in that context it was a negative but also an undertone of jealousy so that's a possibility.

But probably just a nice compliment!

FreshWinterMorning · 10/12/2023 13:38

Of course it's a compliment. 🙄

WhereAreWeNow · 10/12/2023 17:51

@JMAngel1 that's intriguing. I'm all long limbs and short body but I do wear both high necks and scoop necks. I think both suit me but maybe I'm wrong. I wear prints too although I find plain easier.

@closingdownsale

Same here, I think Joan Collins look good! I think with 'glamour models' etc there has been a cheapening down of the word glamour. I would take it as a compliment though unless you are all fake lashes, plastic lips and tits. That is not glamour. Ditto 'brassy blondes' of a 'certain age'. There! I get to be blondist and ageist in the same sentence!!!

closingdownsale · 09/12/2023 14:18

Don't understand why you wouldn't think it was a compliment. Who would be upset about being compared to Joan Collins?!

I would!

Mumofthreewonderfulkids · 26/05/2025 19:47

I was called Glamorous and Ididnt like it at all. I know I am beautiful as I won a few beauty contests earlier in my life. But being called glamorous made me question why. I was wearing black trousers a cami top with a blue silk blouse.. thoughts?

Daffodilsarefading · 26/05/2025 21:40

I would take it as a compliment. I think it means looks good and well groomed, stylish.
I wouldn’t associate glamorous with fake looking. I would also never call anyone wearing say a cropped top and tight leggings and trainers glamorous.

BuntyBeaufort · 26/05/2025 21:56

When someone said to DD that they thought I looked glamorous I immediately thought "Shit, I'm over-dressed".

ClaudeShowers · 26/05/2025 23:37

I think it depends on the age of the person saying it. To older people glamorous is a compliment, definitely. To those of us jaded by the proliferation of drag on our screens, it is now associated with forced parody.

SutWytTi · 09/12/2023 14:17

Do people say it to you when you are in your jeans, or only when you dress up? I wonder if they mean 'glamourous compared to your normal low-key look'?

That's what I'm thinking. I would say to someone who was dressed up but I was used to seeing in jeans/uniform etc that they looked glam. Not because they had loads of make up on.

I was once described to my boss as glamorous by someone years ago because I wore eyeliner and dyed my hair😆 in a job where people are famously quite scruffy. There would have been nothing glamorous about my clothes.

Fatsnowflakecunt · 26/05/2025 23:50

I always get called glamorous. I do like dressing up but I barely wear make up. Though I do like red lipstick. I do have big hair but I am quite low maintenance. Never took it as an insult tbh - maybe I should!
Name change so I can share a pic - it’s an insult I received from an Andrew Tate type man on here 😂

To me it means brassy look, too much make-up, dressing to please men. I wouldn't like it. Sort of footballer's wife type of look.

Same!

Game0fCrones · 26/05/2025 23:54

When i hear the term glamorous, i think of someone like Liz Hurley or Michelle Moane. Just a touch too much of everything/slightly overdone and a little outdated.

That's my perception though. Other people could mean Dolly Parton or the Real Housewives lot. Someone else might think Anjelena Jolie is glamorous.

Do you dress differently to your friends?
