New York and London style: what’s different?

I lurked on the joyful thread about a smart New York wedding and lots of people who lived there were saying you could never wear X or Y that you could wear in the UK.

Purely because I love this stuff, what are the differences between fashion and grooming in New York and London. I always imagine that New Yorkers more often have their hair done, slightly more ‘polished’ look than UK.

There are lots of Parisian fashion threads: what about if I want to be like a New Yorker?

All you need is technical leggings, a floor length down coat, and a $400 blowout. Job done.

This interests me, too, OP. It is a little while since I have been to NYC. I hope you will get some good answers.

I think the look is more similar to Italy than anywhere else but that isn’t quite right, either. There is definitely room for some quirkiness but not as much as in London. As PP implied, the look is more polished than the London look. Also there is more jewellery, hence the reference to Italy. But I haven’t captured it. I am still learning about fashion.

If anything I find that NY fashion is less adventurous than the London one. I do find that London is more varied in cuts/prints/colour schemes but understated in terms of visible labels which, for some reason, are way more frequent in NY. The quality is on par. I also think that since Covid, Manhattan went more 'California-way' in fashion - in that it is moving into more relaxed, informal style.

I was so disappointed the first time I went to New York. I hadn't realised how corporate it was, and their high street shops were atrocious although that was quite a few years ago and I think it's improved. However their second hand / consignment shops were fab.

As for London, well I don't really know what to make of it any more. I used to think it was far more adventurous but I'm not sure if that's still the case. But maybe that's because the more adventurous neighbourhoods have moved and I've not rediscovered them yet.

Sectors of Milan and Turin have quite a corporate vibe also, @Floisme

I think you and @Boska23 are correct that London was (and probably is) more adventurous than NYC (and Italy). That’s better than my word ‘quirky’

That’s interesting… so basically being well groomed & looking smart is key. I would struggle with the hair styling I think.
