Getting shiny big curls?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have naturally curly hair at the front, at the back it goes straight very quickly, and the front looks frizzy and messy quite quickly.

I want to get big bouncy shiny curls for an evening out. I've looked at heated curlers/rollers, might they be a good idea? I don't have a lot to spend, maybe £35-40 max.

Any suggestions? I usually just let it air dry to avoid damaging it, as it's very dry since the menopause. I've stopped using permanent colour and just put a Castings temp colour in every couple of months which is helping it look in better condition.

I've tried Curly Girl, it just doesn't work for me. My natural curls are too small and it still always goes frizzy. I'd just like an option for more formed big curls for evenings out.

A big barrel curling tong or the revlon one step hairdryer

Do you own a hairdryer? It might be worth seeing if you can teach yourself how to give a curly blow dry using that and a good round brush? I prefer my airwrap but it's £££, when I can't take it to places I use a hairdryer and a round brush, then pin the curls in using the little pins boots sells. Works really well! It takes a bit of trying to learn the hand movements but it's much cheaper than buying hot rollers etc to use I think.

If you're after something quicker than teaching yourself a blow dry I'd get a really large barrel curling tong, some pins and look at a video or two on pinning the curls in! Takes next to no time to do and much quicker to learn.

I'm useless with a hair dryer 😳 and I have shoulder problems, so struggle after a short time to hold one too.

I'll look at curling tongs. Are there any particularly good ones? I do want big curls, I presumed a curling tong would give smaller curls.

I'm not long home from my first ever curly cut. I'm 52 and my hair looks amazing, finally! It's all about how the layers are cut. No curlers, tongs or blow drying with twiddly brushes or finger wrapping. I'm so thrilled.

My stylist did a consultation first. Then my appointment today was asking what I hoped to achieve. She cut it dry, washed, diffused and then cut again when she saw how my curls fell naturally.

I can't recommend you finding someone who can do the same highly enough. Honestly, you're life will be changed!

Btw, I had a section at the back that was always straight and underneath was curly. Now its layered properly, it's all curly.

Get the thicker barrel tongs - the thicker the barrel, the larger the curl. You can then loosely pin the curl to cool after it's been curled using the barrel, that helps give it "bounce" and sets the curl in. A good shine spray and bit of hydrating oil or similar on the ends are my tips for shiny looking curls. There's loads of YouTube videos on it if you fancy a late evening watch!

Thank you. I can't get a good hair cut in time for the evening out.

Any particular shine spray you'd recommend?

No need for heated curlers. Wash and blow dry your hair to 80% dry / straight. Normal rollers will work. I use the foam ones you can sleep in (actually used to go to work with them in on a friday 😂) leave them in and take out 90mins before you're going out. Im a curly girl and it always works for me x

You could also try cheap and cheerful rollers. Velcro or foam. Use some setting spray or mousse first, roll your hair damp and leave until dry.

If you choose a curing tong, go for a medium size barrel 1 1/4 or 1 1/2" Good luck and practice before the big event!

Is it flat at the back because you are sleeping on your curls? Can you 'pineapple' your hair by piling it on the top of your head and use a scrunchie to secure them. Then sleep in a sleep bonnet.

It probably is to be honest, sometimes I remember to pineapple, I'll have to do it every night again.

Last night I put two Velcro curlers in at the front just to try it and the bouncy curls this morning are amazing, so maybe that's the way to go, I just thought heated curlers would be quicker.
