Urgent- Indian Wedding dress help needed

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out. I've got an Indian wedding to attend in 3 weeks - it's for a colleague and she's gently asked everyone to wear something Indian. I've always loved the look of Indian dresses but never actually worn one. Honestly, I don't really know much about them. A couple of friends mentioned a Saree, but here's my situation: I have a 7-month-old and I'll be taking him with me, plus I'm BF. Could someone point me in the right direction for where to buy or get a saree that's okay for BF? I'm in North Kent but can go to London if I have to.

You could buy the pre stitched saree and get a matching maternity blouse/top to wear under it

flawless29 · 07/12/2023 19:33

Thanks, but can I buy it online?

Hey,

Check out Green Street or Ilford Lane in London. There are some online stores but it's cheaper in store x

KaiserChefs · 07/12/2023 19:39

Lots of shops in Luton and Leicester do sarees. Many have ebay stores. You could have a browse and see what they've got. However, sarees are usually made to order or imported from abroad and I wouldn't expect either to reach you in less than 28 days so you might have missed the boat.

I don't agree with buying ethnic clothing from western retailers BUT Asos do sell some saree's. Just search Saree or Kanya London on Asos. C

Shes asked you all to "wear something Indian"? That's as naff as insisting that all your guests wear green! It's so rude to expect your guests to go and buy things especially - what if you had an absolutely beautiful dress that you were desperate to wear?

flawless29 · 07/12/2023 19:43

I think Luton or Leicester will be too far, so maybe I will find something in London. Would I be able to BF in a saree, that's the other concern

You’ll definitely find lots in London, get some glammy salwar kameez and you’ll be fine

Blueroses99 · 07/12/2023 19:51

Saris are not your only option - pre-made blouses rarely fit me and need to be tailored. However they would be practical for breastfeeding.

Other choices are two piece trouser suit (salwar khameez) or skirt suit (lengha) or a long dress (I picked up a few of these on Ealing Road, Wembley). I don’t wear saris enough to feel comfortable, especially when attending an event with a child.

Then don’t go if you don’t like it?

SausageAndEggSandwich · 07/12/2023 19:57

You could wear a lehenga (skirt) and a top you can bf in

MsSquiz · 07/12/2023 20:00

I wore this dress from Virgos Lounge for a friend's Indian wedding last October. You might be able to find one on eBay as they aren't cheap but it was ideal

Fyi, that's not me in the photo

Ah, I missed the breastfeeding bit. That dress would not be helpful at all!

LauderSyme · 07/12/2023 20:10

Traditional saris can be very complicated to put on and wear correctly, they can almost be the clothing version of origami! So I wouldn't necessarily recommend one for an Indian dress novice who is breastfeeding.

Southall in West London offers whole streets worth of shops selling stunningly beautiful Indian clothing of all styles. Many specialise in wedding outfits. I heartily recommend going there if you can.

LauderSyme · 07/12/2023 20:12

Sorry if I have misspelled saree.

But that's not what I said. I literally said go online and find their stores and browse [their online stores] to see what they have got [online in their online stores], not go to Luton or Leicester. 🧐 This whole debacle is wasteful enough without adding in emissions driving across the country to buy the item of clothing you're only going to wear once.

Most companies that make sarees in the UK are small businesses who make to order (as I said). I thought it was obvious, that means you just phone them up or email and ask them to put a discreet zip down the front to be able to BF. 🤦‍♀️ Of course you can't BF in an item of clothing made of rigid fabric that has a covered front.

Your main issue is timescales of whether they can custom make something that would work for you in time.

Doggymummar · 07/12/2023 20:25

There are loads o f beautiful Indian clothes on Vinted.

flawless29 · 07/12/2023 20:26

Just looked on YouTube, I think a saree would be too tricky for me . I might go with a selwar with trouser that’s seems doable. I think I will get it in green street to Ilford as some you suggested .

Coffeeandabookplease · 07/12/2023 20:35

Has anyone said a lehenga choli yet? I wouldn't recommend a saree with BF. If you do, safety pins and practice are your friend - my baby liked to pull my pallu. Also you need a petticoat in a matching colour.

Diya online have good delivery times and accurate sizing.

Also pro tip if you did go down the saree/BF route is to get a stretchy choli from Amazon (go up a size!) in a colour that goes with the saree.

The salwar is the trouser, the kameez is the dress. The Pakistani shops will have what you need in ilford

The world's longest link. Apologies. However gold goes with most sarees and the stretch is BF friendly. You can get sari with prestitched pleats, I have a few from rupali but go for the sale ones as otherwise they are too dear for the quality imho.

Have a look at the Facebook group pre loved desi it's people selling old Indian outfits if you don't mind second hand x a skirt and a top with a scarf would be best for breastfeeding, x

nuggles · 07/12/2023 21:16

I breastfed my little one at an Indian wedding last year. I wore a lehenga as much easier to navigate with a baby. I got a zip put into the front of my top for access.

My sister wore an oasis maxi dress and jazzed up with lots of jewellery which she breastfed in before.

Tip: negotiate if you go to green st. Prices are whacked up all the time!

Also bought outfits off Etsy but depends on delivery time.

Good luck finding something!
