Am I going to look ridiculous?

It's my sports club Christmas party, not fancy, at a WMC although our members aren't WMC people, on the whole.

It's Christmas, I'd like to dress up a bit, although probably not strictly necessary.

I have this dress, I know its a bit middle aged try hard and dated, but it's comfy, fits well and feels good on. My shoulders are a good feature and I have decent legs. Plus I don't have time to look at other options.

I was thinking with opaque tights and chunky ankle boots, or maybe bare fake tanned legs and the chunky boots?

I’m a boot and dress wearer. Always get compliments, but I also really don’t care on other peoples opinions as I like to stand out and be different. Ballet flats look awful and I’d rather people think I look shite in a pair of boots! Wear what you like OP and own your personal style. Confidence is the key!

MiddleagedBeachbum · 09/12/2023 08:44

I disagree with most posters here - heels often look really dated now.
im a huge fan of biker boots and dresses, it’s the contrast that looks great.
love the magenta dress!

Callipygion · 09/12/2023 09:23

I absolutely love that navy dress! It’s gorgeous!

Rina66 · 09/12/2023 09:32

Could you wear silver kitten heel ankle boots with the navy dress?

I think the boots could work - it's a certain look, but without us seeing what you look like, it's hard to say whether it will work for you. However...if you don't have funds to buy any other footwear and/or you like the look of the dress with the boots, then wear them 😎

No one here will ever know 🤫

I was about to say that the slip dress I can see with the biker jacket and boots, that's definitely a "look" and would work! but not the halter neck one.

Agree with this!

User43219 · 09/12/2023 09:54

At our Christmas party, there was lots of sequins.

For me if it's not too dressy and you want to wear chunky boots where a skirt or slightly less dressy dress (that first one wouldn't look right with biker boots at all). I did the mini skirt and chunky boots look. I looked just the right side of smart/casual.

As for slip dresses and biker boots, I remember Grunge and that style and wearing that sort of thing. I'd look dated if I tried that now as would anyone old enough to remember it, in my opinion.

Floisme · 09/12/2023 10:34

Spending money on something that's not your style and that you don't like that much for a single event where everyone's going to be pissed to even notice is totally bonkers.

Has the op even said 'biker boots' by the way? From what I can see, it was another poster who used that phrase, I've only seen the op talking about 'chunky ankle boots' and 'biker jacket'.

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/12/2023 10:56

@MotherOfUnicorns4 , ballet flats look great on Audrey Hepburn, but not many people look like Audrey Hepburn.
I think the chunkier footwear is more now.
And ballet flats IMO can make feet look small in comparison to the body.

TruthRevolution · 09/12/2023 11:37

The magenta dress will be grand with boots. I'm 43 and would wear a similar dress with my platform docs.
Long gone are the days of me being uncomfortable in heels!

I agree that chunky boots wouldn't look right - if you are trying to dress it down and don't want to wear strappy heels, how about party flats?

I like them, particularly the second pair. Whoever uploaded them to Next's website didn't proofread the content tho' - there's a terrible typo in the description.

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/12/2023 11:56

Oh goodness. Those are hideous.

HairyBanana · 09/12/2023 12:12

I don't understand these responses - boots would be an awesome addition to these dresses, and would look much more stylish than and traditional party shoes.

I'm not convinced boots would go particularly well with the first dress. Some dresses work really well with boots, and heels and sandals and flats but that fussy blue dress isn't one of them. It also depends on the boots.

Although for a one off Christmas party I doubt it matters or anyone will notice.

Katharineblum · 09/12/2023 13:14

@Floisme I agree.
I’ve been to sports club parties in the past and they were very casual. Definitely different to say works dos where everyone is trying to out glamour everyone else.
Hate to say it but I’d think you’ll be a bit overdressed although obvs it’s entirely up to you !

Floisme · 09/12/2023 13:54

Yup, although to be honest, I'd say the same about a works do - half the people are pissed before it even starts, the lighting's bad, everyone looks like crap in the photos and no-one's going to either look or remember.

That said, I quite like the second pair of those party flats (linked upthread) but I still think it's nuts to buy something that's not your usual style for a one-off event - unless it's something major like a family wedding. If the boots didn't quite work then I'd spend the money on accessories to help them work better - things I'd be likely to wear again.

IlkaDoxie · 09/12/2023 14:17

OP the first dress is lovely and I would totally wear it with boots - your navy suede ones sound perfect 👌

Happyhappyeveryday · 09/12/2023 14:23

I agree about the navy block heel. Have a lovely time x

Illbebythesea · 09/12/2023 14:45

I think with a faux short leather jacket and the chunky boots it would look nice. But you need a jacket of sorts to make it more casual & go with the boots. Otherwise it is a dress that requires heels.

easilydistracted1 · 09/12/2023 15:58

The first outfit is too dressy for a working mens club, no matter how you dress it. It would look a bit retro trying to dress it up with chunky boots but not convinced in a good retro way. Jeans and a nice top is probably about right but I could see the magenta dress working if you dress it down with the biker boots and jackets. That obviously makes it less Christmassy but would look good. Retro grunge in a good way. I don't know why everyone is so freaked out by the idea. Check with your colleagues. You might find everyone's in jeans and a sparkly jumper for do number one and you're there in a glam slip. Fine if you're the don't care type but them you probably wouldn't have asked on here

Lindjam · 09/12/2023 16:03

Is this a north/south thing?

Completely normal to wear big chunky boots with dainty dresses where I live (South coast)

Wahtnow · 09/12/2023 16:09

I give up, I'm going with this, coated jeans and trainers 🤣 I'd forgotten I own this one!

That's nice. Probably better suited for the event than either of the dresses.

Have a good time.
