Like salopettes but not salopettes?

Contemplated posting in skiing, but it's not very busy there yet. I'm going to France in February as a non-skiier (have been on many ski holidays as a non skier before, all good) and usually if it's freezing in the day I'll just wear salopettes anyway because they're so warm.

This year I'm in the joyous position of having lost 2st so need new trousers. I was thinking that salopettes are a bit pointless because I don't really need all of the elastic/double layer etc around the bottom. But they are so warm and feel a bit like getting into a sleeping bag! Is there a half way house, with the lovely warm cosy feel, but without the bulk? Have some across 'ski trousers' and 'ski pants' but I'm not sure quite what I'm looking for. The ultra warmth is key!

Hi Tokyo, I live in central Europe, where it’s been minus 8 at night recently and minus 3 in the day. As a previous poster mentioned, thermal fleece tights or trousers are your answer. They don’t even need to be expensive or from an outdoor shop - I have a stack of thermal tights/leggings from Primark (700 denier?) and they do the job just fine. It means you can wear fairly normal trousers or even a skirt on top. DD has the kind that look as if they‘re see-through, but actually they‘re a layer of black on top and nude fleece underneath. It’s a game changer for winter wear.

Oh brilliant, thanks, I knew you'd know!

I would get proper ski trousers/snow pants. Slim fit ones if that’s the look you prefer. If you’ll be riding lifts as a pedestrian to meet the skiers of your group at restaurants up the mountain you definitely do not want a wet bottom! And even the enclosed bubble lifts can get wet from the skiers themselves and their equipment on a snowy day. The only way I think you’d get away with thermal leggings or tights instead, and personally I’d be freezing in those if I was sat eating a meal outdoors for 2 hours, is if you have one of those mega long duvet coats plug longer snow boots so nothing is actually exposed.

Fleece lined thermal trousers?

Thermal Skinny Outdoor Trousers Black (acaioutdoorwear.com)

I live in these for most of the winter!

Me too! The acai stuff is great, but the cheapest but quality.

Another vote for these. They are marvellous. True to size. I wore them pretty much constantly for a week in Iceland last month.
