Running shoes for teen DD

DD15 has asked for running shoes for Xmas as she wants to take up running. It might never happen so I'd like to get something fairly stylish that she can still wear anyway!
I know ASICS are pretty good running shoes but don't think they're very stylish.
Any ideas please? New Balance?

All our local park runs are 9.00 am. I have trouble getting her to football for 11.00am. Technically she could squeeze it in before but it's never going to happen Grin

Thanks for all those links @Kirsten Blest will have a look.

@KirstenBlest all parkruns start at 9am in England and Wales and 9:30am in Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. With the exception of a couple of random ones that rely on ferries to get runners there.

@NotFastButFurious , thanks. I'd have looked a right numpty turning up when others had set off half an hour earlier!

Don't go mad and spend a fortune until you know it's something she will stick at. Basic Nike running trainers are absolutely fine!!

A fluorescent top for running in the dark is more important.

You really don't need to do gait analysis until she's a bit more elite... and any shops that offer gait analysis won't seek cheap trainers.

*sell

The wet footprint test (sportshoes has a description of how to do it) is a good idea for an ‘at home check’.

Most people have average feet and for a beginner can probably wear any trainers - HOWEVER best to get it checked just in case she does have something that would suit a particular trainer fit etc

I agree about the lightweight jacket.

Montgomerystubercles · 05/12/2023 20:20

I'd check out Born to Run before committing to gait analysis and mainstream trainers. Starting running in something properly designed for running (and not just designed to look nice) as a teenager means she has every chance to not develop all the problems that plague most runners, like plantar fasciitis, knee and ankle problems etc. Try vivo barefoot, or Altra,

DD(16) runs, after a fashion. She is more of a swimmer, but can do decent 800m+ runs and does a few Parkruns/cross-country.

The chains shops (Runners Need?) won't do gait analysis on a child (I'm not sure whether that is insurance or safeguarding-driven).

Most of her shoes are/have been Asics. She has some HOKAs that we paid £5(?) to get stain protected (which, considering the mud she runs through, was money well spent).

She has long, thin feet and plenty of shoes don't seem to fit well.

If you go into a shop it is helpful to specify an approximate budget +/-, I find.

Jawbone-style headphones are worth owning too (next xmas/birthday)

Good point about probably being too young for gait analysis. I'll do the wet foot print test.

She has all kinds of kit from years of football and the gym but her current school trainers are hand me down Asics. Not sure I'd let her run round here in the dark but we have a light reflective vest.

She has seen some Adidas junior running shoes for £30 on the site someone linked to above so will check the reviews and her feet. Otherwise we'll head to a running shop and see what they have.

@Madcats where do you get the stain proofing done? Sounds good!

I've just double checked and it was at our local Cotswold Outdoor (which has a Runners Need concession in it).

Thanks @Madcats we have one not too far away. I was thinking the coating was probably going to be bad for you and the environment but says not. Gait analysis only for over 18s though.

I'd get the £30 Adidas ones if she likes the look of them, and see how she gets on with them. They'll probably be fine, and if not she can wear them as leisure shoes.
