I’m rubbish at make up myself but my daughter enjoys watching tutorials and trying stuff out. What would you recommend as a Christmas present? Which ‘bits’ will she want and are there any brands you’d recommend for that age that won’t break the bank?

@ChristmasBaublesandMore no, not a joke.

Bobbi Brown does some lovely looking natural looking make up and is where my own mother took me at a similar age for a lip gloss.

If you are judging re the girls age that's not the question being asked here.

Get her a bb cream or tinted moisturiser that's properly matched, a tinted lip gloss and a mascara and an eyebrow pencil
Then get some fun eyeshadow pallets (if you want cheap but reasonable quality I'd go for the Superdrug Revolution stuff as they've got lots of shades and colours etc)
Sephora used to do a great beginner's set with lipglosses and eyeliners too

IMO 11 is too young.

Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.

I just hate to see very young girls wearing make up.
It's sexualising them and making them super conscious of their looks for too soon.

If anything, some slightly coloured lip balm for cold weather might be nice, without being OTT.

Oh good grief it’s just dressing up! As I’ve said several times she would never leave the house in it. It’s not something I’ve personally ever been interested in because I just can’t be bothered, but she thinks it’s fun, a bit like copying something they do on art attack. For Halloween she copied a tutorial to do zombie make up for me, it was very sexy.

ChristmasBaublesandMore, pretty much what I originally said. Clinique, seriously!!

I started to play about with makeup when I was about 8, my favourite thing to do! I would look to get her

  • Multi shade eyeshadow palette (BPerfect, Revolution, Morphe)
  • Glitter Glue (Elf or NYX)
  • Loose Glitters (Elf or NYX, BarryM if that is still around)
  • Glitter Liners (NYX)
  • Maybeline Mascara in Brown or Clear (Non Waterproof)
  • Blush, go for the marble sparkle ones instead of the solid colours (Milani is my fave)
  • Bronzer, Face powder and a primer in the 3 for 2 from rimmel
  • Brush selection, Amazon for these
  • Secure storage case or makeup bag

I would stay away from liners at her age, they can stain the eyes and especially pencils will pull on her eyelids which are still too soft to use this product, a gel or glitter liner is more suitable.

You mentioned she has asked for skincare anyways but get her a simple or Nivea eye-makeup remover. Get her own face cloth to avoid makeup stains and also it’s a good way for her to check it’s all removed x

Some kids get interested in face art at a very young age. It can lead to a very lucrative career! My DD is very arty. She's 10. Like you, I'd not allow her to go out with a face full of make-up but at home, I don't see the problem. Have a look at the face art palettes on Google. Loads come up.

I loved experimenting with makeup from an early age (and still do)- for me it was glitter babes from boots and body shop! Obviously I wasn’t sexualising myself by covering my face in glitter/wearing bright lipstick - it was just fun. Barry m is a nice cheap-ish brand with surprisingly good quality products. Nyx is also good, their colourful eye palettes are really pretty.

@kenyaswhiterefrigerator Bobbi Brown has, sadly changed recently IMO.
I started using it about 10 years ago but they have completely changed their colours and now they are mainly pinks, golds and shimmery. And at around £25 for a single eyeshadow they've lost the plot IMO.

The 'old days' of BB being great for slightly older women who used to want to look good, but natural, have gone. (I've seen lots of similar comments here saying the same thing.)

For my 13th birthday me and my cool aunty went to a big department store for a joint makeup lesson. She bought me some bits after. Was great fun.

Summerdew · 04/12/2023 16:59

I’ve bought mine revolution and too faced for Christmas. I can’t get too excited about them being tweens and wanting make up, they don’t wear it out often and when they do it’s with me or their dad. To be honest anything that encourages them to wash their face and look after their skin is a bonus!

Superdrug have several makeup starter kits that have a bit of everything. They won't be good quality but if it's just for experimenting with at home that won't matter.

Do get a nice gentle make up remover and some reusuable pads to go with it.

Natural Collection at Boots is aimed at younger people with subtle colours, but if she's arty and into experimenting look at the palettes on BeautyBay - one of those, eye brushes and eye primer would be fun.
