Hi!

I'm 31 and all I wash my face in the morning and in the evening I clean my make up off with a wipe. That's it. I want to get into skincare a bit so I'm a bit overwhelmed. I don't want to spend loads, so if I only buy 2 things, what would you recommend? My skin can be a bit red and a have darker eyes sometimes but in general not too bad! Thank you.

Facial moisturiser and eye cream

Deathraystare · 02/12/2023 10:55

Get rid of the face wipes!!! No good at all for your skin. A face wash for sensitive skin . Most brands do one.

https://www.cerave.co.uk › skincare › cleansers

also their mositurisers are good or there is Nivea, Garnier, Simple et al or Boots no 7, L'oreal or Superdrug's own brand.

Cleansers | Facial Cleansers & Body Wash Range | CeraVe UK

Explore our face and body cleansers. Developed with dermatologists, all of our gentle cleansers feature ceramides to help reinforce the skin’s barrier.

If you only want 2 products, I’d say a good cleanser and spf. Ideally you would add a moisturising product to that too.

Britpopbaby · 02/12/2023 12:11

SPF. Garnier do cheap ones. Moisturiser appropriate for your skin type.

learieonthewildmoor · 02/12/2023 15:21

A cleanser and a moisturiser.

Darklane · 02/12/2023 15:30

Cleanser & good moisturiser, agree.
Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, you take it off with a wet hot cloth that comes with it. Aldi make a perfect dupe of it really cheaply . There are lots of inexpensive good moisturisers in the mid price range from Boots, Superdrug or the supermarkets which often have offers on Tesco currently have offers on L’Oréal & Olay.
Or look on QVC’s website, lots of bundles & you can use for 60 days & still return for a refund any time within the 60 days if you decide not for you. They sell Liz Earle & other brands.

If your face can be red cerave, cetaphil, le Roche posey or avene are your friends! (I use cetaphil face wash, avene skin recovery cream and le Roche posey spf). I use a bb cream instead of make up and follow it with Mac fx spray

TheDandyLion · 02/12/2023 16:28

I'f you only want 2 things I would suggest a cleanser and an SPF although I would strongly reccomend a moisteriser in there aswell.

Skincarehelp23 · 02/12/2023 22:35

Thanks everyone. Realising I know even less than I thought. I though spf was for sun protection? Or should I be doing this regardless of sun exposure? I also though cleansers moisturised too. Ha. Idiot!

SPF is sun protection, but it protects your skin from UV rays which are present regardless of the temperature so should be used all year round. SPF is the very best thing you can do for your skin in terms of anti aging.

Cleansers just clean your skin. Not just from make up, but you’ll need one to clean of any pollutants you pick up from the air and your spf. Please don’t use wipes or micellar water. Both are not so great for your skin. I use Cerave hydrating cleanser which isn’t expensive and works really well.

Nochocolateuntilchristmas · 02/12/2023 23:27

Get rid of the face wipes! They are not necessary at all.

DumpedByText · 02/12/2023 23:38

Cerave products are fantastic, I use their hydrating cleanser and then Tropic moisturiser. Cerave moisturiser is also great and all reasonably priced.

Skincarehelp23 · 03/12/2023 01:08

Thanks so much for the advice. As soon as these wipes run out I won't be buying anymore!

I would say it doesn't really matter what cleanser you use, it's cleaning your face and going down the sink, so a cheap one or expensive one it's all doing the same thing. I'm currently using ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm.

If I was picking two, it would be tretinion (Skin+me or Dermatica) and a good spf moisturiser, La Roche-Posay Anthelios is good, I'm currently using CeraVe AM Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF 50 .

itsatravestyy · 03/12/2023 11:55

If you wear makeup or spf you need to double cleanse. Elf do a great cleansing balm (£11) and so do the Inkey list (£6).

For cleanser I recommend cerave (£10)- they have an option for dry and oily skin - and use a flannel to wash you face.

Mousturiser I again recommend cerave (£10+ depending on type and size but you get a lot of product)

There are many great SPFs available which other posters have already mentioned.

Thats kind of the basics. You can also personalise further by adding extra serums and ingredients.

WinterParakeets · 03/12/2023 12:13

I'd suggest a good cleanser and moisturiser. They don't have to be expensive but you might need to shop around for ones that suit your skin type. I have dry, sensitive skin and use Garnier rose cleanser or their micellar water for make up removal. Then Nivea Q10 moisturiser or pore reduction moisturiser. I use both of them morning and night.

bippityboppity87 · 03/12/2023 14:26

You really only need 4 things (well according to research I've done)

Moisturiser
Vitamin C serum
SPF
Retinol

If I had to pick two I would go for spf and retinol and maybe some vaseline or moisturiser if using retinol

ThreeRingCircus · 03/12/2023 17:45

I used wipes to clean my face too until my mid 30s and now have a pretty basic skincare routine but it is SO much better.

I cleanse with the Aldi Lacura hot cloth cleanser. It's cheap and excellent. Just rub it on your face then wipe off with a warm flannel.

Then I'd get a basic moisturiser for morning and evening. Simple do some good ones that are cheap and also wear SPF during the day.

Skincarehelp23 · 05/12/2023 20:59

Thank you you lovely bunch!

One last thing, my foundation says 'spf' does this mean I don't need to do both of the same day?

OP posts:
SpottyElephant · 05/12/2023 21:17

It’s very unlikely you’d get enough protection from the spf in your foundation. I always use a separate one as part of my skincare routine regardless of what my foundation might have.

Skincarehelp23 · 05/12/2023 21:24

OK thank you. I've genuinely never even heard of some of these things. I must have been living under a rock!
