Warm coat for reluctant husband

allenginesgo · 01/12/2023 19:31

My dh has no warm coat for the winter. He has one thin rain coat and one gilet.

He is a man who wants for very little, is not adventurous and who generally dislikes buying new clothes. However, even he admits he is cold at the moment!

Left to his own devices he will not buy anything and I want to get him something warm.

He wears only black, navy blue, or grey. He will not entertain anything with fur, or patterns.

He would happily wear second hand. Any advice or suggestions?! Thanks in advance

Is he more traditional or sporty or casual in style?

DH has a navy wool peacoat which is surprisingly warm like this

Lots of puffers around if that’s more his style. The Uniqlo down ones are lightweight so he might notice them less? link

What size is he? Have a look on Vinted - some great coats - look for a padded coat maybe, and filter so that you get 'new with tags' or 'new without tags'.

CurlewKate · 01/12/2023 20:03

Be careful. I hate wearing a coat too. I'd rather be a bit cold than wear a coat. My dd bought me a lovely one and I have to remember to wear it when I see her!

DuckDuckGoose23 · 02/12/2023 04:53

My not very adventurous younger brother has asked for this for Christmas: https://www.next.co.uk/style/SU081776/N58329#N58329
It’s warm and waterproof as well.

For something smarter my husband has this coat (or something very similar by the same brand) in navy: https://www.next.co.uk/style/su089467/353217#353217

I wouldn't buy him anything. He is capable of buying his own coat and chooses not to. He won't wear whatever you get.
How do I know this - because I've been there before. Bought jacket after coat after jumper for allegedly cold son. Asked what he wanted and then bought it. Did he wear them? No he did not. Don't waste your time or your money. When your husband can be bothered enough he'll buy a coat.

BadRover · 02/12/2023 05:27

Perhaps take him with you to a large outdoor type shop. Spend too long loooking at something of no interest to him in a nearby section on a cold day…. Sometimes we need to be led.

mindsetchange · 02/12/2023 06:16

Canada Goose is the way to go. They are expensive, but I got mine 2nd hand from Ebay.

Zampa · 02/12/2023 06:41

Decathlon do great Arctic explorer style coats. DH has one to watch DD1 play football.

Is he clear what he dislikes about buying new clothes? I have a reluctant husband and his issues are fussiness about fit, distress at how much things cost and ultimately inability to make a decision. He also didn't want a puffer coat which is currently dominating coats.

I dragged him round town and I swear he tried every single coat in every shop. We eventually found a winner and of course he couldn't decide so we left it.

After a week of mulling (and the weather being cold) he finally bought the coat. (Sadly there wasn't one on Vinted)

I'd recommend taking him to somewhere like Cotswold Outdoor and trying on a lot of coats. DH liked Patagonia and Didriksons - due to lack of massive branding, yes North Face I mean you.

This. He is a gorwn man, leave him to get cold if that's what he chooses.

Have a mooch on Vinted.

I did get DH a fab coat from Tesco last year though

barbarahunter · 02/12/2023 07:36

He's an adult. Let him live with the consequences of his inaction.

Precisely.
If he’s not bothered why are you?

JofraArchersFastestBall · 02/12/2023 07:47

My husband is fussy about clothes, and prone to buying nothing for himself...
I got him one of these a few years ago and it's been excellent. Plain, well made and nicely warm. It was cheaper a few years ago, but still worth the price for something that will last years imo

Pigtailsandall · 02/12/2023 07:58

My dh is the same. The cold weather finally propelled him to buy a warm Uniqlo coat with a hood which is water-resistant and without logos/embellishments. It's khaki but I think they do other colours too.

But if he's like mine she'll have to deal with the constant moaning of him being cold! 😐

Helikon-Tex M65 Covert

If he likes carrying bits and bobs like Swiss Army Knives, Torches, dog bits etc. and wants functional and adaptable.

The M65 jacket was made famous by Rambo in the first Rambo movie. Since then it's been modernised and made.by tons of manufacturers.

The Helikon Tex m65 Covert is one of the best versions. Plus, it has a removable winter specific lining so it can be worn from autumn to spring making it very adaptable.

I think they're very flattering on just about any man and may have 'borrowed' several over the years myself. 😁

KissTheRains · 02/12/2023 08:19

Can't edit my above post.

I made an error.

Helikon Tex make 2 version of the M65 the standard, for about £100 and the Covert for about £140

The Helikon Tex M65 Covert - doesn't have an insulated liner but has tons of pockets and other features.

The Helikon Tex M65 Standard - Does have the insulated liner but has fewer pockets and features.

MrsWimpy · 02/12/2023 08:19

Carhartt Active jacket is almost like a hoody and actually very warm.

Hopeandmoss · 02/12/2023 09:10

I would buy him a navy synthetic down jacket. My husband sound a lot like yours and he loves his. Warm enough when needed but you don’t stand out from the crowd and then easy enough to stuff in a bag when you don’t need it. Washes great too. But whatever you do don’t buy a real down jacket as I can tell you from experience that if you stupidly wash one of those you will be waiting 2 weeks for it to dry!

AnnaMagnani · 02/12/2023 09:26

It's all very well saying these men are grown adults and can face the consequences but with mine I then have to face the continuous moaning and not being able to go anywhere as he doesn't have the appropriate clothing.

Plus a number of them will have ASD mine almost certainly does.

Plus I love him, he does stuff for me so it's not all one way, and after a weekend when we were dating spent going to every optician in town it's not as if I didn't know what I was getting in to.

My mum and I shop for him, it genuinely makes my life easier.

Great quality, great cause, some a bit pricey. Definitely suitable for the man who likes a more classic style.

I'm with the let him get cold brigade. He's an adult who is perfectly capable of getting, or at least choosing, his own coat.
