you think of your grandmother/s.

I think of Elnett Satin hairspray, Vitapointe intensive hair conditioner and her lovely lipsticks.

Her glamorous powder compacts - she had a gold one and a metallic maroon coloured one with jewels on the top.

Proper lipstick in gold containers with a little "switch" you pressed to stick it up

My dm had one with a little metal flap attached to the lid that you could flick out and it was a tiny oval mirror! I think had a little Gainsborough type art work on it!

You can DH uses it. Sainsburys sell it

Elnett hairspray, talcum powder, a bright coloured lipstick by Lancôme. A perfume called HoHang by Balienciaga. But when my grandpa got Parkinson’s and lost his sense of smell she switched to Angel by Mugler in the hopes he’d be able to smell it ❤️

Nivea cream in a blue tin and 4711 cologne.

Ditto! Gran despised expensive creams and believed that the less you put on your face the better. She had great skin.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/12/2023 19:22

Parma violets. She always smelled of answer sickly violet perfume. She wasn't very nice and the smell of violet always takes me right back to her being horrible to my poor mum (she was dad's mum)

Blingismything · 01/12/2023 20:33

M&S used to make a range of products called Forest Fern, it smelt lovely. Also Astral cream, Cremolia and Yardley Tweed and Flair. All used by my Granny.

CopperLion · 01/12/2023 21:06

yy to elnett, Nivea, Yardleys and Imperial Leather.

Jellywobblescobbles · 01/12/2023 21:59

Coty L'Aimant perfume, Avon lipstick, Avon nail polish

My grandmothers both died before i was born, but I'm the older demographic on here, and my Mum was born in the 30's.

I remember her setting her hair in rollers every Saturday morning, plenty of backcombing and spray afterwards. Basically the same hairdo as the Queen in the 70's.

Also a tiny mascara in a pan with a little brush that you wet. I think she only had two lipsticks, a pink one and a red one.

TheGander · 02/12/2023 09:47

That kind of frugality seems quite attractive @mdinbc given our excessive consumption these days.

DelphiniumBlue · 02/12/2023 10:08

One of my grandmothers was very glamorous and always used Revlon Red nail polish, and Revlon make-up products.
She travelled a lot, and maybe for that reason her make-up bag was quite small, just a lipstick or two, cream blusher , eyeliner and eyebrow pencil, and sun protection, a brand called Sun Sea and Sand I think, that smelled divine!
She used to bring me duty free perfume sets, the ones with several small bottles from a particular brand, so exciting for a teenager in the 70's!
