Turtledove dupes

Turtledove fingerless gloves seem madly and increasingly expensive for a couple of (repurposed) cashmere tubes. Also I am not convinced they last very well. Has anyone found a good alternative?

Plenty of similar items on Etsy.

I do think Turtle Doves are good value for a small business manufacturing in the UK. We've just lost sight of what things cost becuase you can buy gloves in Primark for 99p.

Also they do have lucky dips and sales from time to time.

Sherlocklovelyhomes · 29/11/2023 18:45

Am I right in thinking the turtledoves are just bits of chopped up jumpers sewn into wristwarmers? As in machine sewn with thread? Do they fall to bits?

When I was a kid all my jumpers were unravelled and the wool re-knitted into a new jumper.

Sherlocklovelyhomes · 29/11/2023 19:01

Sorry OP I have not answered your question. I would look for a fingerless glove or a fingerless mitten that has been purpose made. If you look at ones that have been knitted they will have a rib that helps the garment keep its shape and then it won't be as draughty. If the turtle doves are manufactured in the way I think they are then they wont have the structure to last.

I'm all for re-purposing and re-using but I think the best way to do this in this instance is to buy a second hand jumper and use it as a jumper, darning if necessary. And to buy a pair of gloves that have been knitted as gloves. If you google cashmere fingerless gloves you will see some that are similarly priced to the turtle doves. Cashmere gloves will not be as hardwearing as merino. The fibre you choose will depend on what you use the gloves for. For wearing in the home to type cashmere would be great. For more general use a merino or lambswool would be better.

They dont fall to bits and they are great! If you look on thwir ebay site, they sell lucky dip seconds on it for around £7.99 a pair. You can write a message in the comments box to the seller asking for a particular kind of colour (eg ideally not pale pink if at all possible) and i believe they try to honour that.

They are quite easy to make if you have an old jumper. Machine knitted jumpers don’t tend to unravel. You can make them out of any part of the jumper but the cuff end of the sleeves is easier

PaperBlinds · 29/11/2023 21:25

I have made similar from felted wool socks and sleeves for myself, but these are a gift. £35 seems a lot, and obvs 99p acrylic made in a sweat shop from Primark is not what i am looking for of would buy!

Good shout on Etsy and checking back it looks like there is a sale on.

They're cashmere, so not really the same as a traditionally knitted jumper that can be unravelled and re-knitted.

Lots of secondhand cashmere things in charity shops you could use to make more? I think these work better from felted fibres actually

Mine are in perfect condition after seven or eight years, I think they're brilliant.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/11/2023 23:41

I bought them from the eBay seconds shop. Very easy to make your own though, they're just hemmed jumper sleeves.

Robin60 · 02/12/2023 21:48

I have a couple of pairs and absolutely love them. In my experience they have lasted 2-3 years at least, wouldn’t be without them x

mrssmiling · 03/12/2023 05:53

I bought some two years ago - love them, and they are so warm! Agree re checking for sales. They are still in vg condition btw.

Mummymummy89 · 03/12/2023 06:10

I have several pairs from turtledoves that are going strong after 5y or so, plus some neckwarmers and a pair of leg warmers. I usually buy when they're on sale.

But I will say that they are very small, which is perfect for me as I have really tiny wrists and hands. But if yours are falling apart maybe you need a bigger size. I can't remember if they do sizes but if not you could get a men's pair, I think the style is basically the same.

The leg warmers (one size fits all) were crazy small, I could barely pull them over my heels, I wear a size 3.5 shoe! Who would they fit...!

fairygalaxy · 03/12/2023 06:17

The turtle doves "durable" or whatever they are called are brilliant and even survived a wash in the washing machine

scrivette · 03/12/2023 06:17

I have two pairs and I really like them, I also have a couple of pairs of wrist warmers from Primark. The Primark ones aren't as warm but do the job.

The Turtle Dove ones are tighter and fit better under clothes (I often wear them indoors as I have poor circulation).

I have to agree with this. Bearing in mind each jumper is different so it's not a standard size each time I think they are good value.

I got Anna Falke 'wristees' for my Dad last Christmas in one of the plaid designs. They seemed nice and soft, and warm when I checked them out before giving them to him.

I have large hands and the ladies ones fit me fine. They have a bit of stretch. They do have similar ones on Etsy.
