Best socks you’ve found if you’ve got very cold feet? (Raynaud’s)

Raynaudsfeetadvice · 29/11/2023 08:23

I have Raynaud’s and get cold easily. But I also work outside part time! I’ve got some lined boots, and I wear wool socks, but I think they might be thin as I can feel this year’s chilblains coming on already from yesterday's cold snap.

What socks do people recommend?? I’ve tried Uniqlo’s, they’re ok but don’t quite do it.

Nordic socks. Amazing. I have reynauds and they're the best socks I've found!

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 08:28

I'm interested, too. Similar reasons to that of @Raynaudsfeetadvice the OP.

I'll have a look at nordic socks, thanks @Thinkitsrainingagain. Any thoughts on cashmere socks? I've seen them mentioned on here but never sure if they are actually good socks for cold feet or classic MN 'lovely present' ideas!

Tistheseasontobejollytrala · 29/11/2023 08:29

Smartwool, totally amazing.

WhamBamThankU · 29/11/2023 08:29

I bought some thermal ones from a pound stretcher type shop, they're amazing. My feet are really warm when I take them off. They were £5 but worth it

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 29/11/2023 08:34

Another recommendation for Nordic socks. Was sceptical when I had them bought as a gift, but on my feet now and my go to at home.

SoddingWeddings · 29/11/2023 08:37

I live in natural fibres only as I'm allergic to wool, and bamboo seems to be warmer for day to day. I've not found good non-sweaty winter socks yet! Recommend sheepskin insoles.

HelloandGoodMorningPlease · 29/11/2023 08:39

My hand knitted socks. So much better than anything you can buy and last for years. More people should learn how to knit socks, it’s a game changer!

madeinmanc · 29/11/2023 08:40

With all due respect as people are only trying to help, recommendations are only valid when they come from other people with Raynaud's because people without the condition will find something warm and toasty that just won't be sufficient for someone who has it.

Lotsofthings · 29/11/2023 08:48

Try looking at ski company solutions that have boot warmers, heated insoles and heated socks with battery pack to get some heat back to cold feet. Ariat boots are made for being outside long periods for mucking out horses.

GrouchyKiwi · 29/11/2023 08:50

Best I've found are merino & possum wool from NZ, so a bit hard to get over here. Sometimes I find them too warm. But a merino mix might be achievable, and probably very warm. Also thin enough to be layerable.

Now if anyone has recommendations for actually warm gloves that would be grand. My hands feel particularly cold this year.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/11/2023 08:50

Silk socks worn under thicker socks.

Cheeesus · 29/11/2023 08:51

I’ve read that cashmere wear out very quickly and are really best for bed socks.

Have you got wool insoles in your shoes? I think that makes a big difference. They are not expensive eg

I find sheepskin insoles do way more than switching sock brands

For mega warm, sheepskin mittens. You can even put gloves on underneath or have a heat pad in there.

DH has Raynauds and I have circulation problems (joyously I get chiblains too), and alongside using lambswool insoles and ensuring that your legs are warm, the best socks either of us have found are the D2D socks which are looped merino, not sweaty, wear well and so warm.

@GrouchyKiwi I've just bought a pair of sealskinz gloves which seem good. For running I've a decathlon pair which are gloves that have a mitten over the top as well and they are brilliant.

BabyQuark · 29/11/2023 08:58

@GrouchyKiwi Seconding mittens. I also have reynauds and switching from gloves to mittens genuinely changed my entire experience of winter. I used to plan my winter days out around avoiding having to go to the loo, because my fingers would be so cold I couldn't do my trousers back up after! But if I have mittens on whenever I'm outside I don't have this issue. Life changing!

Christmassy · 29/11/2023 09:00

Op. If you get nordic socks, i suggest the 'proper' ones below, not the patterned type purporting to be them. Those are nice but not as warm (due to wool content i think)

Wednesdaysotherchild · 29/11/2023 09:01

Heatholders! Warmest socks I’ve ever owned.

SoftandQuiet · 29/11/2023 09:04

Babyquark that sounds so awful, your poor fingers! It really demonstrates to people that it’s not just ‘cold fingers’ (or toes). Sheepskin insoles are a good idea and what about trying Bridgedale hiking socks?

sunglassesonthetable · 29/11/2023 09:04

The Sheepskin insoles that go inside your shoes. What about using those with some of the suggestions on here.

A double approach

Lovethatforyouhun · 29/11/2023 09:30

Cashmere socks with regular ones on top. Always double sockage!

WhereAreWeNow · 29/11/2023 10:03

For me it's about layers. Silk socks under wool socks and sheepskin insoles. Making sure you have a good chunky sole too. I can really feel the cold through thin soled shoes.

madeinmanc · 29/11/2023 10:11

The core of the body must be kept warm as well because it's loss of heat from the core that prompts the Raynaud's attack.
