Wavy hair products

Hi. Can anyone recommend wavy hair products that work to create nice non frizzy waves.
I have longish thick hair which I blow dry straight to avoid frizz - but when its wet it has a wave and dries frizzy if I leave it to dry naturally.
I am hopeful that using the right products might result in decent defined waves. I think I need to buy a diffuser as well.
Any suggestions welcome please

No advice OP sorry 🫣 but I’m shamefully jumping on your thread because I have the same hair and the same problem… I’m sort of giving up but always secretly hoping the product solution is out there!!

I had a bit of success with K18 but not enough to justify the insane price!

olaplex an expensive mistake. Curly girl a disaster.

Trying Aveda nutriplenish shampoo and conditioner at the mo. It’s ok. Agsin, I still don’t think it’s enough frizz reduction to justify!

styling product wise I’m currently using a kerastase leave-in and a Paul Mitchell serum, then leaving to air dry. It frizzes way more than I like but if I blow dry it is just bushy, plus frizz. At least this way I get curls and waves too.

I had luck with the Noughty Wave Hello range for ages.

Then suddenly my hair was getting all fluffy - complete texture change, which I think just happens every now and again!

I’ve tried lots of things but Only Curls is working for me right now. It’s pricey by comparison, but nothing else was taming the frizz ☹️ I got the mini set to try it out at first.

witchypaws · 27/11/2023 17:04

I don't do full CG. I wash and condition then use mousse and gel or just gel
Then scrunch out the cast when it's dry
I like treluxe products but it's trial and error so get mini sizes if you can

Just washed it last night

Oh this is interesting as I've just ordered a starter pack from Only Curls in the Black Friday sale.

I am having the exact same issues as you OP, so hoping for a miracle product!

Fluffyhoglets · 27/11/2023 17:21

Thanks for all the advice all! Please let us know how you get on with the Only Curls Wensleydale.

Witchypaws - amazing hair i don't think mine will ever be that wavy but I might have to give mousse a go too. Flashbacks to my 1980s perm has put me off mousse but your hair looks great!

I've just started embracing my wavy hair after decades of blow drying it straight.

My hair is coloured and really thick too, I only wash it every 3 days or so. I use bed head shampoo and conditioner in the brown bottles, it works great with my hair. Shampoo the roots and lots of conditioner on the ends. I leave it wrapped in a towel to soak up the excess water after rinsing. I then use a spray in conditioner and comb through with a wide tooth comb, I then spray with heat protector and scrunch with wave jelly and then curl mousse and diffuse until mostly dry and then leave it to dry the rest.

It isn't super curly but gives beachy waves that last a few days.

mdinbc · 27/11/2023 20:54

Wendyspotatopeeler, that's 4 products on clean hair! That seems a lot!

I've always had waves and will use either a curl cream, spray or mousse. One one product though! Right now I have the Moroccan Oil Curl Defining cream, and John Freida Dream Curls Daily Styling Spray. Both good products. I use a diffuser attachment on my hair dryer after leaving it air dry for a while.

I find a lot of mousses flake when they are dry, making it look like you have dandruff.

mdinbc · 27/11/2023 21:00

Correction, only one product at a time!
here’s mine, but it was a few years ago; I’ve let it go grey since.

Leave in conditioner - I use banana food. Plop. Then when I take it down I scrunch in boots curl creme.
I don't do full curly girl as still use sulfates etc otherwise I get horrible product build up.

If you want to blow dry and then put in your own wave then I absolutely love the dream coat spray - blow dry with baby kiss big curl and then use straighteners to curl. But it's not for every day as it takes me ages.

And weekly elasticiser treatments.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 27/11/2023 21:09

I like Cantu products and a sock diffuser over my blow dryer. Air drying takes soo very long, and the sock diffuser leaves it less frizzy then a regular diffuser.

I have waves rather than curls, but quite curly underneath; always coloured, so use a lot of conditioner.

SwimmingFree · 27/11/2023 21:11

I love Bouclem Curl Cream, gives me nice waves and I love that it's light and I don't feel it in my hair at all, I hate sticky or crusty hair products!

TheLocust · 27/11/2023 21:11

I've been trying Only Curls as my hairdresser raves about it but I'm not too impressed with it. Don't think I'll buy it again. For my hair, OGX Curling Perfection Defining Cream seems to work best.

Bootoagoose123 · 27/11/2023 21:13

Boucleme! I tried the 30 Days to Curls/Waves products set and my hair is seriously less frizzy and more defined curls. Took a while to get used to not having the "shampoo" feeling when washing hair though.

AnnaMagnani · 27/11/2023 21:24

Ecoslay Banana Cream conditioner is my desert island product.

Don't like the shampoo at all, the gel is fantastic but needs effort to get right but the conditioners (I like the Rice Pudding leave in as well) are amazing and give clumps of frizz free curls.

Depends on your hair
I often use mousse, gel and then a volume spray. My hair is very fine and needs a lot of hold and some grit

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/11/2023 23:42

I shampoo and condition - products used vary, atm it's Tresemmé shampoo for dry hair then Inecto coconut conditioner. After rinsing I apply Cantu curl cream to damp hair with a shower comb. Microfibre turban to dry it a bit while I apply lotions etc. and get dressed. Then Tresemmé heat defence spray before pixie diffusing on mid heat full blow to get my hair partly dry. Finally I apply a little Pantène hair oil and scrunch out any hardness.

Ends up like the pic below. I have quite a lot of grey hairs though (I'm in my early 50s), which do have a bit of a mind of their own, I find. No intention of colouring my hair, though. Repeat process every three days.

I have this type of hair. Can I get away with just one product? I simply can't do so much. Mine is similar to yours @mdinbc though not such a striking colour.

HermioneWeasley · 28/11/2023 13:39

I have very fine, slightly wavy hair. I’ve tried a few curl specific products but found that the cheap as chips shockwave mousse is best for mine. I just srunch into wet hair, comb through, scrunch again and let it dry

LadyPoison · 28/11/2023 14:06

I found the Charlotte Rich Wavy method works well for me. It takes a bit of getting used to but I have it down to a fine art and only need to wash mine now once a week.

Tresemme Pro colour safe shampoo and conditioner followed by Curl Whip Mousse and Harry's Gel. Once every 3 weeks I use a Noughty clarifier to remove the product build up and some protein drops as my hair is bleached and coloured.

It's never been so well behaved. I've always been at war with my very thick and coarse hair but now I actually quite like it!

mdinbc · 28/11/2023 19:18

CharlotteRumpling - yes, I just use one product at a time. Listed in my post at 20:54 yesterday.

Wendyspotatopeeler · 28/11/2023 23:02

I suppose its actually 5 products after the shampoo and possibly 6 if I run some oil through the ends. It works for me and I don't do this every time I wash my hair, only when I want the waves to hold. I have very thick, course, bleached type 2B and 2C hair and can easily take lots of heat and product.

Dinosaurpoo · 28/11/2023 23:11

Boots cheap as chips curl mousse is the best thing I’ve found for my waves. And I’ve tried a lot!
scrunch loads on to damp hair. Air dry. Scrunch out the crispy bits. A bit of Moroccan oil for any frizz. Simple yet effective.

NotMomButHereToHelp · 28/05/2024 05:08

Hey so hair care is a lot so I'll try to be simple. One of the big things with hair is moisture and protein balance. If you have too much moisture your hair is stretchy and mushy when wet meaning you need more protein and when you have too much protein then your hair is dry, brittle, and yes, frizzy. It sound like your problem is that you need more moisture in your hair so trying a deep conditioner once a week like 3-minute miracle waves by Aussie could be a good start because it is fairly cheap. Along with that really any light weight curly hair leave in conditioner or cream could help too. Oh and also washing your hair too often can lead to it being dry. I try to let my hair be oily for a whole 24 hours before I wash it and I always take the time to brush all the oils through my hair. I know this seems gross but the oils your body naturally produces are REALLY good for your hair, better than any hair oils your can purchase.
