Are tights/stockings considered old-fashioned now?

Genuine question. I'm just wondering based on something I read elsewhere on the web.

And if they are, how on earth do people keep their legs warm in winter when wearing skirts/dresses?

Sheer black tights are all over the place here…

Singlecelledorganism · 25/11/2023 13:39

Plus TikTok is full of the fleece lined fake sheer tights…

BreadBag · 25/11/2023 13:40

I wear black leggings rather than opaque tights if I'm wear boots for comfort.
If I'm wearing shoes and just want to cover my legs I wear sheer tights, and I still wear nude sheer tights.

I have never considered whether they are old fashioned.
DH hates them with a passion and says they are just for Nans. Is what your reading written by a man?

blueshoes · 25/11/2023 13:42

Interested to know too. I don't like to show my pasty bare legs.

EBearhug · 25/11/2023 13:42

I'd rather be old-fashioned than frostbite. I'm happy to go bare-legged in summer, but not today - and I'm planning to wear a dress to a party later.)

There are loads of tights (and stockings) in the shops. What is it you read online?

IDontHateRainbows · 25/11/2023 13:44

I wear leggings with boots under a skirt or dress instead of tights, although not in a work setting.

greengreengrass25 · 25/11/2023 13:44

I'm sticking to tights

Nice warm ones all the way

shivawn · 25/11/2023 13:47

Black tights are fine. Those nude sheer ones have been very old fashioned for a long time.

This always baffles me. Are you just freezing with bare legs when you go out for the night in the winter or only wearing dark coloured dresses. A bright sparkly dress with black shoes and tights looks awful in my opinion and you can't possibly be wearing pretty coloured shoes with black tights.
Maybe I am old though? But I'm only 40.
I'll wear glossy nude tights till I die.

Weirdly, no! A woman posting on the Ask A Manager site about whether they'll look old-fashioned as part of an interview outfit. I'd never really thought about it before...

Same here. I come from a party town where it was the norm for young women to walk about in skimpy dresses and no coat or tights even in the dead of winter, but I always wore them (and a coat) even when I was a nightclubby young thing, not risking pneumonia for a night out...

@BreadBag No I'm 36 so just a few years younger. I'd go bare legged and put on tan but would be spending very little time outdoors to be fair and it's always hot inside. I don't think sheer tights are going to be very warm anyway are they?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/11/2023 14:05

It's a layer of protection from the cold, but apart from anything else I find tights with skirts and dresses and popsocks with trousers make feet far more comfortable in shoes.

greengreengrass25 · 25/11/2023 14:14

Newcastle?

lesdeluges · 25/11/2023 14:15

Why do women care about this? There's nothing wrong with nude tights, black tights, sheer, opaque, whatever works for you. I am baffled to think that everyone or anyone would be interested enough to comment on your choice of hosiery! But perhaps it is to do with the Menz approval or not?

Anyway FWIW I use opaque popsocks with comfort top for dark trousers. Sheer similar popsocks for lighter coloured trousers and always, always, sheer "hold up" stockings for dresses and skirts. I cannot stand tights around my nether regions ever, that's why I use hold ups. But I buy them in a size larger than I think I need to avoid strangling my thighs! They don't fall down if you buy good quality and the right size for your thighs.

Comfort can be combined with a good look, never fear.

Ah well I don’t own any sparkly dresses or pretty coloured shoes! If I go out of an evening in the winter I’ll be wearing a smarter version of what I wear in the day - dresses or skirts with dark tights and boots (knitted tights if I don’t need to be super smart), or jeans. I don’t really have a sparkly party dress lifestyle!

Exactly. It's an extra layer of protection. It's surprising just how much difference even a thin denier makes. Agree re comfort of shoes too.

I actually think bare legs in cold weather, especially with boots looks really odd. It's cold enough for boots but not cold to wear something on your legs? How does that work?

A bright sparkly dress with black shoes and tights looks awful in my opinion and you can't possibly be wearing pretty coloured shoes with black tights.

not at all - depends on the dress and the shoes and there's nothing wrong with coloured tights and black tights.

OverCCCs · 25/11/2023 14:26

Ask a Manager is US-based, where it is indeed very dated to wear nude stockings, or really anything other than black tights (opaque or sheer) or, maybe, brightly colored ones as a fashion statement.

If you’re not US-based, then no need to
worry!

Each to their own but I honestly think it looks horrendous and don't understand it at all.
But then I would never wear trainers/converse with a dress and everyone else thinks that looks great so it probably is just me. Stuck in a past I never even lived in.
Edited for missing word.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 25/11/2023 14:34

I don't wear any kind of tights or stockings these days. I don't wear dresses or skirts anymore. But if I did I'd wear whatever I wanted. I think nude tights are not so much dated as classic. Even teens wear them if they're the best option with their dress/skirt but black is favoured where possible.

i would love to be thin enough to wear woolly tights & a dress, but I look like a lamp.

wear what you want & feel good in & don't worry about it!!

LoreleiG · 25/11/2023 14:37

How can tights be fashionable or not. They’re tights. If it’s cold and you want to wear a dress, they keep you warm. End of.

ChristmasShopping23 · 25/11/2023 14:38

I saw footless tights on sale when I was shopping yesterday. Do people wear them with socks and boots maybe?

lookingforMolly · 25/11/2023 14:40

I'm wearing these tights from New Look to my Christmas Party on Friday night with a short silky jacquard black wrap dress from River Island; & black heels from Boohoo.

I'm not doing bare legs as I have veins I need to hide which show up despite a tan, & I tried on some party maxi dresses but most were too long for me & still show some leg anyway.

lookingforMolly · 25/11/2023 14:40

Sorry pic of my New Look tights

lookingforMolly · 25/11/2023 14:42

Also I'm wearing a short jumper dress to a restaurant tonight with chunky block heeled Chelsea boots - with my 120 denier black opaques as it's going to be arctic.
