my dd is not thin but she is not over weight..she has a little tummy.... went to matalan today she tried on some jeans and even age 13 wouldnt do up....

I know she wouldnt fit in skinny fit jeans i am not unrealistic..

any one know where i can get some generous fit ones? that i dont have to get a bigger size in and so thye wont be mega long....

god that's awful isn't it! How to start the paranoia about body shape nice and early....bloomin shops. Trouble is with the cheap shops like matalan they cut skimpily to save money of course.

For jeans I always find marks and spencer more generous on cut so maybe give them a try. Keep matalan for cheap tops and stuff that the fit isn't so important on perhaps!

chocolatespiders · 12/03/2008 21:52

thanks.... i knwo what you are saying and felt so sorry for dd

we were in matalan looking for a top her friend had... but then dd saw some jeans she loved.....

will try marks and sparks

I know how you feel! My DS1 is higher on the charts for his height than his weight but some trousers are a little tight on the waist - others almost fall down!

Tinker · 12/03/2008 22:01

My 10 year old can fit into Next jeans ok. She's about 5'2"+. I usually have to get her age 12/13 clothes.

DD (who is 6 but wears age nine for the length) is not overweight but finds jeans a real challenge. Despite throwing money at the problem the only jeans she will wear are from Tesco because they are stretch. They aren't anything special but they feel right.

brimfull · 12/03/2008 22:11

I think this is quite a common problem for this age.My dd found it difficult to find trousers to fit her hips at that age as they were all so slim fitting. She's a slim adult size 8 now so no problems with her weight.
Just thought I'd reassure you that it's not your dd but a problem with the clothes not catering for all the different shapes of a prepubescent girl. Some are skinny malinky at that age and others have burgeoning female shapes.

Polgara2 · 12/03/2008 22:19

When dd1 was 9 I had to buy her age 13 jeans to fit around her tummy - took us ages to find any that were comfortable enough but I got ones from Next in the end and just took them up (skinny style). Now she's almost 11 and the same jeans are still going but they are waaaay too big because she is just changing shape naturally.

TooTicky · 12/03/2008 22:31

Dd1 (now 11) has had the same problem. All trousers these days seem to be made for tall and skinny girls
Nothing against tall and skinny girls.....

TooTicky · 12/03/2008 22:32

We found buying cropped trousers in a bigger size helped.

Tamum · 12/03/2008 22:35

We have exactly the same problem- dd also not remotely fat but prepubescent and I keep having to buy age 12-13 and take them up. It's a pain and I hate the message it's giving her.

soapbox · 12/03/2008 22:44

MMJ - at the prepubescent stage most of DD's friends seem to have changed shape - but the children's ranges are cut the same way from around age 7-11/12 so the cut doesn't reflect their changes shapes.

My DD has been most fortunate in that she is very tall for her age, so is in the teenage ranges which thankfully are cut to fit better. She does struggle though with tops - as the 12 yo ranges are cut for boobs so can be a bit baggy on those with tiny buds.

Don't forget that girls have a huge height increase at puberty - as is usual with any growth spurt, it is not unusual to chub up a tiny bit before they gain the height.

SueW · 12/03/2008 22:44

Try George at Asda?

DD (11) tried on their 10-11yo skinny black jeans yesterday and they were massive round the waist and just the right shade too long iyswim.

She is (we recently weighed and measured) 147cm tall and weighs 34kg. This makes her slightly taller than average and slightly lighter than average for her age.

chocolatespiders · 13/03/2008 10:02

thanks for the reasurance.

I honestly dont think she is overweight although i am not sure what an ideal weight is for her age... If i thought she was i would be addressing the weight issue.. and changing a few things without her knowing(iykwim)

i will try the suggested shops.. thankyou

strangely the cropped jeans we can buy they seeem to be a different cut? and she lives in these... just be nice to have something different and like her friends....

like some have said it doesnt give a good message to the girls ... i felt awful when the silly jeans age 13 in matalan didnt fit...

pukkapatch · 13/03/2008 13:56

why are you going to matalan to buy clothes?
go somewhere wehre they make clothes to fit people, not mannequins.

pukkapatch · 13/03/2008 13:56

little girls have round bellies. it is their body shape

chocolatespiders · 13/03/2008 14:11

wasnt my choice!!!! not been there for ages and ages... would normally only go there for house stuff!!

but dd had seen a tshirt from there that she liked... so off we went and then she spotted the jeans....

I like matalan jeans
and they're only £10.

bundle · 13/03/2008 16:52

we went to 6 shopss before we found a pair of jeans for dd (nearly 8)

her old pair were Gap but new ones they have in didn't fit - nor did M&S etc etc

got pair eventually in Next, with lots of fake diamonds on them

think jeans v badly cut for both kids and adults

EiWishFor3MoreWishes · 13/03/2008 17:06

i have this problem trying to find jeans/trousers to fit my DD and she is only 2.2yo i have actually found ethel austin good for the trouser size and length as they tend to cut for a slightly larger measurement. she is (and was born on) the 95th centile and is the same for her height aswell so is in proportion but has a little round belly and chubby legs so her size trousers just dont fit her comfortably it is an age/size wide problem as i myself struggle to find jeans that fit comfortably as i am in between sizes in many shops
i hope you find the right shop
xx ei xx

PatsyCline · 13/03/2008 19:27

La Redoute do different sizing for different shapes for teen girls. Generous size, regular and slim fit:

misdee · 13/03/2008 19:30

hi, i started a thread a few weeks ago concerned about dd1 and how we couldnt get clothes to fit her. she is average size 8year old, and weighs just 4stone. is upper end of ok for her height.

i bought her two pairs of jeans last week. one from the girls section in age 9-10 that fitted and had to roll up the legs. And a pair from the boys section, in age 7-8 that fit perfectly.

pukkapatch · 13/03/2008 19:54

all normal healthy young children have little round belly's. that is their shape. any place that doesnt cut for normal human shapes shouldnt be given your custom.
i was once given low rise jeans for my 18 month old.....errr, where was the nappy expected to go? what were the shop thinking of? fashion is all fine and well, but it has to fit onto human beings, not plastic mannequins
