Is it possible to wear an ankle length dress to the supermarket without looking like a dong?

I have absolutely horrible legs. Like two uncooked sausages, fat out of all proportion to the rest of my figure and cankles too.

This is fine. I have made my peace with my legs and adore them for the servicable job they do ferrying me about every day, but I never inflict them on other people.

I always wear long (ankle length) skirts, and occasionally trousers.

Every summer I get Summer Dress Envy.

Is there such a thing as a casual dress that's ankle length? For wearing to coffee shops, going to the park, and picking up supper at Sainsbos?

Hmm, thats a tricky one. I know 'maxi' dresses were de rigeur last year but were prob. a bit dressy for Sainsburys...I reckon you could wear a half decent linen longish skirt? With a nice little cotton top?

Have you tried fake tan on the old legs to perk things up a bit? I bet they are not as bad as you think they are.
I'll have a look online for long skirts.

Skirts I have no problem with. I love skirts and can 'do' skirts.

I want to branch out into dresses without looking like a deranged hippy / pregnant (when I'm not) or lost on my way to a ball.

Well other people might steer clear of you but, I would find you instantly interesting. I always notice people (very admiringly, I have to say) who don't follow the herd.

Oh I think I'm guilty of the Dalek Look sometimes Pelafina. Skirt so long you could be on wheels? It's never intentional but I'm 5'4 so it's a hazzard.

Love the shape of the second dress Digby. Quite like the dress generally, though not BF friendly. Had one similar to the first once and words cannot describe how unflattering it was on me .

I bet there is.

An ankle length, bf friendly, casual, inexpensive, summer dress. That I like. Not too much to ask is it??

Actually, I had a thought... I could wear a normal cute summer dress over pale linen trousers.

(Because nothing says New Baby Wardrobe like a pair of pale linen trousers...)

Shirt dress with cami underneath? Undo buttons and hoik up cami. I did this for a wedding when bf dd.

Or stretchy wrap (or faux wrap) with a cami under?

Or stretch with a deep v neck and a cami under?

Hmm. Can you spot the theme? I think I may need to research camis.

And bah to you and your complete clothing freedom . I'm at the stage where I violently loath all my maternity stuff but am going to pop in just over a month so no point getting any more.

Or you could just buy an ugly feeding dress?

Never found a bfd friendly dress

As for long casual dresses, I think a plain linine one is fine with nice flip flops/flat sandals and chunky jewellery for the day time. I used to have a lovely black linen long shift type dress. Unfortunately, I am too fat for it now

moondog · 12/03/2008 20:19

Those are lovely Sir. My La Redoute wasn't that nice last time I looked.

SheikYerbouti · 12/03/2008 20:20

Urgh, that dress is ming, BS

I never saw the pint in f"eeding" clothes

rantinghousewife · 12/03/2008 20:20

Am now quite envious, am too short to be wearing ankle length anything.

SheikYerbouti · 12/03/2008 20:23

SY I always want to wear them but, everytime I try one on, I just look like I am wearing my mothers clothes. Mind you a lot of clothing does that to me, unless it's quite fitted.

BroccoliSpears · 12/03/2008 21:42

I am determined to feel good and look nice this summer too Pelafina.

This is a wildly implausable plan as I will be covered in poo and puke, will have an enormous baby apron and will be grey and haggared from looking after newborn and toddler, but I can hope!

def shirtdress over linen trous

bozza · 13/03/2008 11:11

Think both those laredoute dresses are very nice - and bargainous too. I think you would look great in them breastfeeding issues aside. I love dresses. The circles I mix in seem to be very jeans with everything and I find it a bit dull.
