Supplements for hair loss

I have always had very thick hair, but I'm 45 and have had a lot of hair loss. I don't know if this is due to perimenopause but I was hoping for recommendations of supplements or anything I can do to help hair grow back again.
TIA

Some say collagen helps. Has helped my sparse eyebrows regrow.

I'm menopausal and have experienced thinning hair. I've been taking vitamin D supplements for 8 months now and have lots of new hair growth - it's much fuller and in better condition. My hairdresser has noticed too. I haven't changed my shampoo so the only thing I can attribute it to is Vitamin D supplements. I take the Vitabiotics 1000 iu.

hi there, I’ve been doing hair loss and thryoid issues for years and years… can I urge you not to take high doses of anything without establishing that there’s a real deficiency. You really can risk your health over-dosing on vitamins and self-medicating.

My advice would be to ask your gp for some blood tests first. Thyroid disorders become more prevalent in women at our age and so that needs to be checked - hair loss being a classic symptom. Alternatively you could do diy finger prick blood tests privately- vit D, zinc, ferritin and iron, thyroid “panel” are often offered as a bundle. Again, I’d caution against going gung-ho into self-medicating without getting proper advice on your results and general health. The hair loss may well be an indication of several issues in your health/body (hormones, anemia, nutrition, thyroid…) and need appropriate and cautious care.

Last thought, easiest thing to do for yourself now while you do more research and perhaps testing is to eat as well as you can. Nutrient-rich and diverse foods etc etc, I’m sure you know the drill…

all the best!

I too would be having blood tests to rule out a deficiency such as anaemia, Vit D, thyroid, hormones to check if menopausal etc. Weight loss or going on diet can also cause hair loss. No point taking vitamins when you have no idea what the cause is!

Whenever my hair starts to thin I eat loads of broccoli and it starts to grow back 🤷‍♀️

Thanks to all for the helpful messages, please note I have had blood tests for any deficiencies along with any thyroid issues…all fine, so supplements may offer something, as yet I can see no change! Hope others benefit.

OP - wish I had better news but I’ve been taking biotin and iron (my iron levels are borderline low so have to take that anyway) for nearly a year and no difference to my hair.

There are so many supplements out there (collagen etc) that claim to make hair thicker or prevent hair loss etc but I don’t know anyone IRL who has had any noticeable success.

The only thing over the years that made some difference to my hair has been switching to Nioxin - didn’t make it any thicker but the receding slowed down and I have regrowth in those areas.

Minoxidil (and similar) is I think the only medication that stimulates re hair growth (I think it’s the active ingredient in Regane products). Haven’t tried it myself as need to investigate whether there are side effects. It’s also as I understand it a lifetime commitment.
