When getting a hair cut, what is this called?

I have v thick mid/long length hair. Or to be more precise I actually have a LOT of fine hair.

The last few times I've had my haircut I've had varying experiences and finding it frustrating but I suspect it's partly my fault for not saying anything, so I want to know better what to say to be able to get the cut I like.
Basically last time I had my haircut I liked it once it had been cut and blow dried and thought, great ....until the last 2 mins when she 'took some of the weight out' (or the most recent time just didn't say anything but just started to) and left me with lots of feathery shorter hair on the top. I have long layers in my hair, but these are not layers, she literally goes through my dry hair with thinning scissors and it ends up kind of shaggy, with lots of shorter bits that I can't tie back..? When what I want is a more blunter cut (I think that's what you'd call it?) So what is this last step called so I can say I don't want it? Thanks!

Thinning?

VelvetVoice · 19/11/2023 23:10

The same was done to me and I think it is called feathering?

CutiePatooties · 19/11/2023 23:11

Feathering. I think.

EverybodyJumpsuit · 19/11/2023 23:21

You need to say blunt cut, no layers, please don’t take any weight out. Then they will tell you they have a special way that works great really just try it and you have to say NO I want a blunt cut with NO weight taken out. You might go round at least twice more but stick to your guns. I have to do this dance Every. Single. Time.

Yes @VelvetVoice that's def the scissors she uses and she runs them down my hair over the top. It leaves my hair looking quite like the hair on the dummy she has there - very wispy ends, which I don't really like?
@EverybodyJumpsuit - glad it's not just me! But also sorry you have this issue too!
I guess I need to be more assertive. It just takes MONTHS for the bits on top to get back to a length I want and by then I need another cut....and so it goes on forever...🤦‍♀️

Just say "Please don't use the thinning scissors".
Or go somewhere else & go in for a consultation first.

Wow yes definitely ask for no use of thinning shears, even on that pro she’s basically hacking hair off. My hairdresser does sometimes thin a little after blow drying but she uses normal scissors just cutting vertically in at the very ends.
