Footwear for icy weather

MrsKarlUrban · 18/11/2023 19:15

Hi 👋🏻 all
Can anyone recommend some good footwear for walking in icy conditions. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis and am clumsy and fall over a lot. I had a doozy of a fall this past winter and it scared me as well as hurting like hell, and apart from staying in all winter I'd like to be prepared and safe while out. It would be walking on mainly pavements and housing estates round town etc, I'm actually feared to walk on ice! Any recommendations would be greatly recieved
Don't want to spend too much so budget up to £70 ish
Thanks in advance ❤️

I got some rubber and metal grips that just attach to normal shoes, might they work?

I already have boots/waterproof shoes to wear them with, so it might not work if you don't, but they're very effective.

MrsKarlUrban · 18/11/2023 19:32

Hi I've looked at those and thought the metal might be slippy? Or need snow for traction? I'm in the northwest and just get a thin layer of ice

Im such a wuss and worry head over it all
I'll have a look 👀
Thankyou x

You want a low pro set up, they work better on intermittent ice rather than solid ice or snow.
I'd look on Amazon, the USA site has lots of options but hopefully the UK version has some.
Clip or slip on grips are a usual way of managing ice.

Caterpillargirl23 · 18/11/2023 19:50

It's a question I was going to ask.
We had some dreadful black ice last year, I have to wear 'office smart' shoes for work. I couldn't walk any distance in them when it was icy they were so slippery. I put on my walking boots instead.
Would walking boots be an option? Not really suitable for me long term though.

BooseysMom · 18/11/2023 20:09

I hate ice! I tend to slip over on ice while wearing walking boots as, although there is supposed to be grip, the tread is smooth and it feels slippery. If possible I try to walk on grass next to pavements. Or slide along on my bottom!! (Joke obvs!)

MrTiddlesTheCat · 18/11/2023 20:19

Rieker do some winter footwear that have ice spikes built in. There's a bit on the sole you flip over when it's icey. I'm getting some for myself.

SwedishEdith · 18/11/2023 20:26

I've just bought some of the rubber spike pull on things because last year was dreadful. My road and the route to the train station was treacherous for days with impacted ice. What worries me about the pull on things is needing to take them off when not on ice. Worried how that works getting on and off the train, stepping onto icy platforms. I'd prefer reliable boots with soles designed for traction.

Boriswentcamping · 18/11/2023 20:34

I got some waterproof trail shoes last year after a nasty fall on the ice. I don't remember the brand but if you google trail shoes and you will see they have a decent amount of grip. They are supposed to be for off road running. But I just walk in mine.

Thanks so much all for your reply's!
I'll have a good look at the suggestions
Here's to not falling on our bums this winter 🙌🏻👍🏻🫶🏻

Wellies. Always the best option if you are worried about slipping and falling.
Not sexy I know, but get some thick socks in your wellies, and you can walk confidently on the ice.

Auldspinster · 19/11/2023 22:25

Walking poles for extra traction and yaktrax.

skilpadde · 19/11/2023 23:20

Snow boots, for feeling generally secure while walking in winter.

www.decathlon.co.uk/women/snow-boots

Then yaktrax as well when it's properly icy.

CyberCritical · 19/11/2023 23:28

Buy some of the really cheap fluffy socks from primark and keep them in your bag. If you find yourself unexpectedly walking in icy conditions put the socks on over your shoes, they stick to the ice. Not a long term solution because they'll wear through and get nasty but they are amazingly good for half an hour or so of walking when you need a quick fix to the problem.

CyberCritical · 19/11/2023 23:29

These people even did a study on it www.theguardian.com/education/2010/mar/09/improbable-research-icy-socks-over-shoes

Chocolateteabag · 20/11/2023 05:57

I have Yaktrax for when it's properly icy/compacted snow

But I also have these strap on grips which are much easier to get on/off and keep in your bag(in a bag) for when you get caught out
Was sure Mountain Warehoue did them but can't find online

hiking shoes.

for your price range decathlon would probably be a good bet. but I've also seen decent ones at deichmann.

Caterpillargirl23 · 20/11/2023 06:47

@CyberCritical
That is a great idea, thank you.

WrinklesShminkles · 20/11/2023 11:57

I was going to suggest socks too. If you buy large sized cheap men's sports socks in black they are easy to put on over shoes and not too noticeable!

These sound perfect but I can’t see them available anywhere outside Canada. If you are in the UK can I ask where you ordered them from?

No I'm not in the UK. I didn't realise they weren't available in the UK. I'm in Sweden and we have them and my friend bought hers in Germany.

skilpadde · 20/11/2023 22:46

@Waxlyrically If you do a search for flip grip boots UK, you should be able to find other brands that make these types of boots, such as:
