How to style this dress for Christmas party?

So I've had a dress in my wardrobe since before I got pregnant with my first, who is now nearly six. It's my weight loss dress, my 'I'll fit into this again one day' dress. And I've tried it on this morning, and it fits!!!! So I'm wearing it to my company Christmas party. I'm so chuffed I might never take it off in fact.

I have no clue how to accessorise it though. I'm looking at it thinking navy shoes and bag, but that feels a bit dull. And not very festive. It's a totally indoor event so not worried about getting cold.

I'm 5ft 2, jaw length dark hair which I'm going to put up in a nice twist. I'm happy to wear heels, just want to feel glam and dressed up! So does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!!

Congratulations!

You want silver shoes. Mary Jane style if possible. Or pointy black patent leather knee high boots. Heels or flat is immaterial - just pick what suits you best.

GlitteringUnicorn · 18/11/2023 13:10

Congrats!

Silver- it's everywhere at the moment so should be an easy option

CinnamonJellyBeans · 18/11/2023 13:20

Treat yourself to a proper pair of Esska silver shoes

NorthernSpirit · 18/11/2023 13:25

Beautiful dress.

Silver heels, a silver bangle & fabulous silver clutch.

Don’t over complicate it - make the dress the hero.

That is so pretty. Silver silver silver all the way.

BeaLola · 18/11/2023 15:29

Agree silver all the way. I have seen lots of silver shoes and bags this season.H&M and Zara had lots of bag options at good prices .

Plantymcplantface · 18/11/2023 15:31

Those silver sandals that @Tuilipcity posted - gorgeous!

and massive long dangly silver sparkly earrings with bits of hair tucked behind your ears

Congratulations on the weight loss but that dress needs to stay in 2017. Treat yourself to a more modern dress. There are plenty bargains to be had coming up to Christmas. You don't need to spend a lot. I loved those type of dresses from Oasis back then and had lots of them but they have since been put to charity.

BoredOfBeingTired · 19/11/2023 09:55

I think it's a beautiful dress, silver shoes and bag - jobs a good 'un!!!

AdoringDavidAttenborough · 19/11/2023 10:00

@Theblacksheepandme This is the attitude that leads to massive overconsumption and waste. It's a classic shift dress which fits OP, why should she ditch it for something new?

Justkoko · 19/11/2023 10:05

Gorgeous dress, silver all the way. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and mine is that op should disregard theblacksheepandme's comments. It's a classic shape and print, it won't really date. It's lovely. Elegant.

Theblacksheepandme · 19/11/2023 10:14

Believe me I am definitely not an over consumer when it comes to anything. Absolutely hate to see people in my work place coming in with bags of shopping from Primark at lunchtime. I also hate to see the over buying at Christmas. You wouldn't see mountains of presents under my tree at Christmas and that includes my teenage daughter. I also absolutely hate food waste. This still doesnt stop me from throwing outdated clothes out. This is a shift dress but the pattern stops it from being classic. I have started in the last 5 years spending wisely on clothes and bought classic pieces. That doesn't mean spending a lot. I haven't thrown clothes away in the last 5 years, apart from underwear.

I also think you're going to be a busy person if you're going to start lecturing people on overconsumption on style and beauty threads.

Salacia · 19/11/2023 10:48

I disagree with @Theblacksheepandme - if you’re throwing away clothes based on them being ‘outdated’ rather than them being broken/damaged/not fitting/not suitable for your lifestyle anymore etc then that is wasteful and playing into over consumption. I’ve never wanted a ‘classic’ wardrobe though - I love clothes with a sense of time and place. I love mixing them with newer stuff to get a fresh perspective. Plus who defines ‘classic’- what’s a classic black dress for example? You could pull out a black dress or a white shirt from every decade going back 100+ years and you’d almost certainly be able to arrange them in time order as even the ‘classics’ are influenced by trends at the time. This is a shift dress with a chinoiserie print. The shift dress has been in and out of fashion for decades. Chinoiserie has been in and out of fashion for centuries - to me that makes it a ‘classic’ if such a thing exists. Fashion is cyclical.

The OP has stated that she loves the dress and feels great in it - she wasn’t asking for advice to throw it away and buy something new based on an arbitrary decision on trends.

OP - I think it’s a lovely dress and know the feeling when you’ve got something you can’t wait to wear! I’d go with an up-do, flicked eyeliner, structural silver earrings (have a look at loveness lee or on Etsy depending on budget). Depending on where it sits on you I might be tempted by opaques and silver ankle boots - kind of a 1960s vibe that would fit with the cut. I don’t think you could go wrong with most silver shoes though - chunky silver platform sandals would work, or something flat with a bit of sparkle.

katmarie · 19/11/2023 18:57

Tbh I don't have the budget to buy anything else! I've scoured vinted for shoes and bags as it is.

I also don't intend to buy any more clothes until I reach my overall weight loss goal, which is still some way away. Plus I only really get dressed up like this a couple of times a year. Anything I buy now will hopefully be too big by the next time I get to wear it.

Thank you for the styling advice, I think I know where I'm going with this now, very much looking forward to getting all dressed up!

For clutch/evening bags can you ask around friends? It’s the sort of thing that is usually lying to one side in a wardrobe so it may be relatively easy to borrow?

I don't have a silver clutch but I have multiple evening bags I'd lend if a friend asked me so definitely worth a punt.

atthebottomofthehill · 19/11/2023 22:01

Silver definitely but not Mary Janes! Too frumpy. Get something chic and strappy (doesn't need to be uncomfy)

Alisondewy · 09/12/2023 08:14

Definitely silver. The colour would work well x

D20 · 09/12/2023 08:38

Silver would look great and it is a classy dress. I’d play very much on the 1960s MOD vibe.
