That article speaks a lot of sense.

Even their childrens clothes are dire these days, everything looks like a slightly shoddier version of something you would find in next.

I like the basics, there is just not enough of them. Too many slogan t shirts and jumpers that would be nice if they didn't have a chavy pattern printed across them.

I posted something on there - how can you see what others have posted?

Do you say that because you recognise her style or are you guessing?

DH gets all his work kit there - it's cheap and sensible and he hates having to spend a premium getting kitted out ... he is in a very non client area so doesn't have to dress to impress

God, M&S is beyond frumpy. Terrible, terrible place.

Good article.

'Miles of uninspiring "value" knits in slightly the wrong shade.' I've always said that about M&S - the colours are always just a bit wrong. Ditto the fancy frilly bits on Per Una stuff.

Now I'm scared of 'claw foot'.

I knew Caitlin was an Mner - didn't realise Lisa might be one too......
Wouldn't it be funny if Lucia van der Post was one of the MN grannies!!

SheherazadetheGoat · 12/03/2008 09:11

the m&s on princes street is like a jumble sale, and it makes me feel sad.

I think M&S is trying too hard to have something for everyone. I used to be able to guarantee i could find something in there. As a size 20/22 I do struggle to find nice, fashionable and quality items. I used to find something at M&S. Not now.

The larger sizes collection they did was dreadful - aimed solely at the over 60s. Now they say that a lot of their items are sized up to a 24 - no they are not!

Kids' school uniforms - great.

PJs - kids and adults - also good.

Underwear - bras - fitting is rubbish if you don't fit their standard sizes. Their control wear is good.

Shoes - used to be able to find something nice but not recently.

SheherazadetheGoat · 12/03/2008 09:23

the trousers have always been shit. even if they didn't have a 'stay press' rayon crease down the front they all retained a homeopathic memory of it.

DeeRiguer · 12/03/2008 09:37

'english' complexions wtf
do you live in small town or parish?

marmadukescarlet · 12/03/2008 09:40

I saw LordV on the TV the other day - didn't look at all as I had imagined her...

PerkinWarbeck · 12/03/2008 09:41

agree with DTWP. I have picked up countless seemingly normal tops in there, only to find some weirdy logo embroidered on the front . per una worst offender.

the cut on the clothes is great for pear shapes though, so I'd love to shop there more often.

Cappuccino · 12/03/2008 09:42

a web chat? are you sure?

on the back of one article?

she's hardly an expert on anything is she

PeatBog · 12/03/2008 09:46

I went into local M&S yesterday and left despondent. Okay, I was in a faff of indecision anyway, but just needed basic everyday jumpers in good colours - surprisingly not migraine mauve, granny blue or boring black.

Will I have to throw more money at Mr Boden to get them?

arfishy · 12/03/2008 09:52

No! No! No! M&S is a shrine to expats. I love M&S. It was the first shop I went into last time I arrived in the UK (Heathrow, admittedly for M&S Coolbag, sandwiches and several bottles of wine to help me through a week with my parents).

Has it really gone downhill? [worried]

I've been saving my knicker purchases for a whole year so I can splurge when I'm back in June.

Limited colection is best and Autograph is nice sometimes too.

Per una is generally ming with extra tassles/bows/patches on everything.

I don't often get dd clothes from there. Everything for little girls seems too grown up and a bit like a mini version of per una.

A new M&S is about to open at a retail park near me, will be interesting to see if it is any better than the city centre one.

M&S quality hit the skids a few years ago. Same as the old Littlewoods store from eons ago. YOu may find the odd nice piece and quite good for basics but other than that forget it and its a damn shame.
