How much do you spend?

I am interested to see what everyone spends on their hair and beauty routine. I think I spend a relatively modest amount but always feel that even that is too much.

I spend £48 on a haircut every 3 months and around £30 on at-home skin and hair care products a month. I don’t have any treatments or have my nails or brows done.

I am in my early 40s now and starting to feel like I need to start investing a bit more so I don’t look quite so run down! I do have some budget spare but just feel guilty spending it on me!

I spend around £200 a month on hair make up and clothes all together. Although, I’ve been spending a bit less recently as I lost some weight so could get back into old clothes.

Why?

GreenMarigold · 14/11/2023 11:58

Well there’s always other things aren’t there? Buying something extra for the kids or to improve the house, or simply having a bit more of a buffer in the bank.

Following with interest as I need to spend a bit more on me. Previously got haircut once a year and fed up of being a mess!

junebirthdaygirl · 14/11/2023 12:10

I spend about 100 on hair per month...need colour and then cut every two months. 30 on eyebrows etc every month. That's it. Very little makeup and never nails . But always the hair!

heyhohello · 14/11/2023 12:46

I get the sentiment you are feeling, I think, @GreenMarigold. I sort of resent spending the money on these things.

I'm not particularly low maintenance but I do my own hair, cut and colour (even make my own hair tint out of foodstuffs!). I use quite a bit of different skincare and hair product items but each item is less than £15 and they last months. Make up lasts me a long time, although I wear it every day only my lip products need reapplying throughout the day. For this reason I try not to buy too many different varieties of the same thing.

Sometimes I feel that is too much but I know all the things I use do make a difference so continue. Thing is when they get good results you want to. I do have the odd panic now and again when an item is out of stock or I worry it will be discontinued however I usually find alternatives. Which makes me feel a bit dependent on the products which is the aspect I don't like. I like to feel more care free but then there's a lot of things I like that I'd certainly miss if I had to go without.

divinededacende · 14/11/2023 13:27

I'm a guy and have no head hair so can't comment on that but, for skincare, it depends on your trying to achieve. I think a lot of people overspend on the wrong parts of their skincare regime and it can become a waste of money.

We're saving for a big holiday so I actually sat and worked out my skincare spend last month (I tried to paste in my excel table but it went wonky):

Cera Ve Moisturising Lotion - £16.50 every 3 months.
Cera Ve SE Soothing Cleanser - £22.50 every 4 months.
Dermatica Tretinoin - £24.99 every month.
Hada Labo Hyaluronic Acid - £18.99 every 3 months.
Garden of Wisdom 23% Vitamin C - £12.00 every 2 months.
La Roche Posay Cicaplast - £18.00 every 3 months.
Paula's Choice 2% BHA Exfoliant - £34.00 every 8 months.

Total: £58.70 per month (average).

It is a lot but each product in my regime deals with a specific issue in my skin and I tend to avoid catch-all general products. I go for the active ingredients that my skin needs and I find the best way to get most of it for the best price.

Figure out what your priorities are; hydration, lines, hyperpigmentation, redness etc. Then match them to the active ingredients you need and shop around for the best stuff to buy. If you can't spend more, spend smart.

Hair (cut & colour) every 3 months
Eyebrows every 4 weeks
Nails every 3 weeks
Pedicure 4-5 times a year

So maybe a couple of hundred a month?

Draculina · 14/11/2023 14:27

Things I do myself:
Haircut (every 4 months) + trims (every 2nd month)
Hair colour (twice a year)
Manicure (every Sunday)
Eyebrows (they don't need much doing to them, I just pluck a few stray hairs out about once a month)
Facial and body peeling

Things I pay for:
Laser hair removal (about £800 annually)
Podiatrist (about £650 annually)

I think that's about it as far as beauty treatments go.

I probably spend around £200 a month on clothes, makeup, skincare and perfumes. I spend a lot on quality leather bags, but I only buy very few annually. But they still amount to around £1000 per year.

idontlikealdi · 14/11/2023 14:32

£20 on Dermatica
£40 on Byoma cleanser, moisturiser and serum
£30 on hair (average as it's £90 every 3 months)
£20 as guess on make up
£40 on Botox (again monthly average)
£30 guesstimate on shampoo / body moisturiser random stuff in boots

Don't get nails or eyebrows done

Growlybear83 · 14/11/2023 14:37

Absolutely nothing until last year when I bought myself the Harrods beauty advent calendar. I've maybe used about half of the things that came in it 😆😆

fetchacloth · 14/11/2023 14:40

I spend about £50 having my hair cut and highlighted every 3 to 4 months.
I spend between £20 to £30 each month getting my nails done.
My eyebrows are threaded every 4 to 6 months at £11 a time.
I don't have any fillers or facials as I have good skin and try and keep it that way.
I believe that self care is important and provides a confidence boost. 😁

Pinkyzstar · 14/11/2023 15:59

Around 30-40 pounds every three months for hair cut and straightening. Sometimes I do highlights for like 20gbp.

Anon2600 · 14/11/2023 17:24

£69 for my haircut every 8 weeks
£65 for hair colour and roots 4 times a year
Elemis skin products - far too much money but wonderful results - I’m early 60s - face wash, night and day moisturiser- plus an exfoliant and face mask which lasts an age
No costs for nails or eyebrows

OnlyCorrect · 14/11/2023 17:44

Biggest expense is hair but I wear that 24/7 so eh. Cuts every 6 weeks averages about £70 a month.
All other skincare, toiletries etc. are drugstore brands or prescription so total £30 a month max, including stuff to do my own brows, nails, hair dye etc.

Beauty isn't really my thing though, it's clothes and shoes that are my downfall!

stayathomer · 14/11/2023 18:02

Cerave eye cream 12€ x2
cetaphil cleanser 18.50€ x2
avene skin recovery cream 19€ x2
clarins bb cream 34€
mac studio fx 30€
Lrp spf50 19.50€ x2

hair 80€ at Christmas (!)
brows 15€ at Christmas!
Works out at about 24 a month

Growlybear83 very tempted to do the same and get a beauty advent calendar this year

Pinkyzstar · 15/11/2023 14:08

Is that for a month?
