Can anyone help me please?

I’m in my late fifties. Just emerging out from under the rock of over two decades of parenting! Trying to overhaul my clothes and skin care and beauty regime as I don’t really have one currently! 😁

I don’t normally wear make up on my face in the summer as I don’t like the feeling of it on my skin.

But I definitely need to wear some make up in winter as my hair is grey and I looked washed out.

I also spend a lot of time outdoors (rural job) in all weathers so need sunscreen and protection against harsh elements.

I gather that there are some newish face tints (not sure that is correct term?) that are skin care and very light foundation combined? Could someone recommend one please for pale skin with yellowish not pink undertone?

I used to wear fake tan on my face but I cannot bear the feel of that now. Dislike heavy foundation too! Don’t mind a bit of translucent powder though.

Can anyone help please? What products should I invest in? I don’t want to spend a fortune either.

And what does everyone do with regard to eye brows and eye lashes nowadays pls?

Anyone? I think it might be tinted moisturiser I need? But which one?

jesmonabullets · 13/11/2023 22:38

Probably tinted moisturiser but I struggle to work out which as I have oily skin so need something less moisturising and more covering!!

You could look at BB and CC creams which are not as heavy as foundation. If you're lacking replies here do a search on MN and you'll find a few threads on similar.

If you're outdoors a lot then sun cream for your face and neck would be a good call (I struggle to remember this as it was never a thing when I was growing up so it's never become a habit). There's some good light lotions. I use Biore Watery Essence.

thebraispink · 13/11/2023 22:47

I would head into boots maybe and have a chat there, some of the bigger boots have people to help.

Or I'd head to John Lewis or a local deoartment store and maybe book with an affordable brand. Maybe Mac or Charlotte tilbury, or go higher end clarins or Clinique. But when you know what you need just keep trying to see what suits you.

I've done the above and found the Aldi moisturiser works well for me.

The women there will spend a good hour helping you with zero obligation to buy, I mean you maybe will buy some items but they will show you application, eyebrows, lashes, creamy eyeshadows etc.

And enjoy!!

Defiantlynot41 · 13/11/2023 23:02

This stuff is fab, comes in lots of colours (I'm fairly pale with definite yellow undertones, most tinted moisturisers are too pink or orange).

Bobbi Brown Vitamin enriched skin tint

I really understand your concern. I find Superdrug and Boots too much to deal with.
Feel that I need an A level in makeup to find what I need .
I genuinely don’t understand all the different coverings etc .
Am going to stick to my basic foundation or have a face job 😂

Zazu44 · 13/11/2023 23:10

Maybe check out some YouTube videos. Pampered Wolf is a good one to follow.

MyGirlDaisy · 13/11/2023 23:18

I am late 50s and work outside. I like Bare Minerals tinted moisturiser, spf 30 and lots of shades. A tube lasts a long time too. Then I just use mascara, sometimes a cream blusher and nivea tinted lip balm. I do use a normal moisturiser as well though otherwise my skin gets really dry.

MCTorridWaffles · 14/11/2023 07:20

Thank you very much for these really helpful replies everyone!

Buying make up is really confusing isn’t it Irritatedandfedupandsad? I’m glad I am not the only one who has difficulty!

I already use a L’Oreal supermarket face cream with sun protection in it thank you jesmonabullets and I did do a search but obviously used the wrong terminology! I have never heard of BB or CC creams so will go and research those now, many thanks! I will have a look at Biore Watery essence too as I don’t like anything too claggy!

Thank you for those useful buying tips thebraispink I will try and enjoy it 😆 I promise!

That Bobbi Brown product looks perfect thank you Defiantlynot41 and I like the fact that the choice is clearly displayed.

I will check out Pampered Wolf thank you Defiantlynot41 (and with the amount of facial hair I have to deal with nowadays I could almost be one 😂 😁)

Thank you I will have a look at Bare Minerals too MyGirlDaisy. I very much appreciate the guidance! I like the fact that you use just a few simple products too.

Feeling a bit more optimistic about my search now instead of overwhelmed so thanks again everyone!

I went into Boots yesterday and had a lovely chat with the girl on the L’Oréal counter and she hooked me up with some basic products, and colour matched them for me. I made it clear I didn’t want my skin to look a different colour to normal, just more ‘perfect’.
I think you should definitely ask an assistant as they can assess your skin type and get the right colour for you.

DuckyShincracker · 14/11/2023 09:37

I like Lancôme la teint miracle as it's a hydrating foundation. I love a Liz Earle moisturiser & cleanser but I supplement this regime with a moisturiser with hyalluronic stuff in it. I get my eyelashes done and only really wear foundation & bronzer. I agree with PP's about popping into Boots. Enjoy your time for you OP!

SgtJuneAckland · 14/11/2023 09:43

If you don't like to start much make up day to day think about a lash lift and tint. I use rapidlash serum and have just started getting a lift and tint, it's just like naturally good lashes. No smudged mascara/clumping, no high maintenance spider false lashes that wreck your own. I like it. That and a tinted moisturiser, I like glossier skin tint and also cloud paint which is a really sheer cream blush , I'm really pale so it just gives me a healthy flush

MCTorridWaffles · 15/11/2023 01:23

I’m really interested to hear about people’s skin care and make up routines on here. Thank you for sharing SgtJuneAckland , DuckyShincracker and Helenahandkart

I am going to try all of your suggestions! 😁

I’ve never visited a beauty professional in my life but I think it’s time! My eyebrows need attention. And a lash tint and lift sounds like an excellent idea.

I used to wear L’Oreal and Lancôme products about thirty years ago when I was working in a formal setting so time to revisit I think!

I like Simple SPF 30 face sunblock/moisturizer in a tube. It's about £7. L'Oréal serum foundation. I've got the yellow based skin too OP. Black mascara on my black eyelashes but only the top ones. Pluck out stray eyebrows from the underside, just those that look out of place then brush them into shape, I don't use any products.

Peekingovertheparapet · 15/11/2023 03:01

I’m a big fan of Clinique moisture surge CC cream, it’s really light though I do find in summer it can be a bit shiny so I do use a light setting powder too (I am a little paranoid since one of our female directors developed a very shiny tone for a while). I useThe Ordinary primer first after my usual skincare routine to give skin an even texture. I don’t wear makeup daily as I find my skin doesn’t really like it…

Gnomegarden32 · 15/11/2023 08:13

NARS Tinted Moisturiser is amazing. I’m very pale and use the shade Finland which is yellow based.

La Roche Posay Anthelios UV Mune spf50 is a fantastic lightweight sunscreen for normal to oily skin. They also do richer ones for dry skin.

JimnJoyce · 15/11/2023 08:54

@MCTorridWaffles boots will do a free make up lesson or makeover for you. you can book online.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 15/11/2023 09:01

You might like Trinny London OP, they do a couple of make-up products that try to bridge the gap between skincare and make up. There's a BFF which is basically a tinted moisturiser that I really like, they also do one with an SPF.

Personally I'm a bit obsessed with Jones Road products right now, that's Bobbi Brown's new range. However they're not in a lot of stores and I think make-up/skin care is something you have to try out first.

GreenMarigold · 15/11/2023 09:07

I use this one by Green People https://www.greenpeople.co.uk/collections/skc-natural-organic-tinted-moisturiser

It is quite expensive but one tube lasts me 3-4 months. I’m quite sensitive to the feel of make up too but it just feels like moisturiser, not heavy at all.

It doesn’t give an obvious made up look but it just evens out my skin tone and a bit of a glow.

MCTorridWaffles · 16/11/2023 11:13

Thank you very much for yet more suggestions!

GreenMarigold that sounds spot on in terms of the sort of thing I am looking for thank you.

Trinny was my first thought thank you LaviniasBigBloomers but her range is not easily try-able where I live. I will be in London at the end of Nov and will look out for it there plus Jones Road. Thanks!

And thank you Gnomegarden32 and everyone else for your very helpful specific recommendations of products which are really useful, and will be added to my list for investigation! I’m very grateful.

Look at Beauty Pie (lots of people will disagree with me) but the One Powder Wonder compact is fantastic. It disappears, but makes skin look magically improved. Don't be put off by the whiteness of it... you will not look like a kabuki puppet!

Papyrophile · 16/11/2023 17:11

And I like some of the skincare products too, although some are too scented.

CissOff · 16/11/2023 17:21

I use Bondi Sansa tinted moisturiser when I’m on holiday - it’s spf 50 but provides some light coverage.

I could wear it at home but use the No7 hydraluminous foundation mostly. I’ve tried umpteen foundations over the years and o always come back to this - others have felt too cakey, too drying, take ages to apply etc etc. this I just whack on and go.

BlowingAway · 17/11/2023 11:21

Lumene skin tint is a very light foundation/moisturiser. I love it for smoothing everything out a little without looking or feeling like I have makeup on.
I usually put it on after Laura Mercier illuminating primer and together they make my skin glowy but not shiny.
