Gel nails

Looking for views! I am interested in doing my own gel nails at home - get them in the salon do eg opi at home. My questions are: how easy is it to remove at home and do you damage your nails? Does anyone recommend a particular brand? Can you use only the varnish that goes with the brand? Thank you!

I use a mylee lamp and mylee, shellac or blue sky polishes. I’ve had some cheap ones from eBay and they smell funny so I don’t use them now! I use mylee byab under my polish. I use their remover too - you buff the shine off, brush the remover on and it shrivels the polish for you to scrape off. I’ve had no issues at all with it, my nails are still in great condition and I’ve been using it for 2 years or so.

I developed an allergic reaction to them by doing them at home. I don't think it's too much of an issue now but apparently a lot of people developed this (this was about 9 years ago).
It's been in the papers in recent months actually.
Just be careful with what you buy because this allergy is absolutely awful

I did mine at home for a while but my technique was terrible so I'm back in the salon. I like the manicure not just the nail polish.

I use Mylee. Removal is fine. I stick to one brand for gels, lamp etc. as incompletely cured gel is one cause of allergies. Definitely read up on the allergies and do your own risk assessment though. You need to be very careful to not get it on your skin (or if you do, wipe it off before curing). I have never had any damage from gels or removal.

I have a sensationail lamp. Will it cause allergies if I use a different brand of nail gel? I have used blue sky in the past.

No, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm another one who developed allergies from having gel nails. I even trained in them but the training was very poor which I didn't realise at the time.

The cheaper Asian products are often poor quality and contain a higher level of harmful ingredients.

Also, be aware that if you develop an allergy to methacrylate and similar chemicals, it can prevent you receiving certain medical treatments used in dental surgery and orthopaedic surgery.

Surely nail salons use a lamp and different brand polishes?
