Thinning hair aged 49

My thin hair is even worse now I'm peri. Can anyone recommend any supplements that definitely help?

I know (from my job!) peri is all the rage at the moment and so there are lots of unscrupulous marketeers out there tagging it onto products with abandon. But I'd love to hear any recs from people who really think something has worked for them re the crap hair situation.

Thank you.

HRT has helped mine.

Perfectlystill · 12/11/2023 22:17

Thanks. Do you mean Oestrogel?

I've been taking collagen powder every day since March for creaky joints and the change in my hair has been a very welcome but unexpected side effect - it is noticeably thicker and faster growing. I look at pictures of myself from a year ago and my hair was much thinner then..

I decided collagen supplements were too much hassle but biotin shampoo and conditioner seem to help quite a bit.

PURA D'OR Original Gold Label... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FH692PQ?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

It’s literally a spoonful of powder in my coffee each morning, so zero hassle at all! I use the ancient and brave one which is tasteless too. I really think for hair and skin issues it needs to be addressed internally rather than with external products.

ScribblingPixie · 12/11/2023 23:11

Millet supplement worked for me.

Do you know your ferritin level? Mine's v low and causing thinning hair. HRT has definitely helped a bit, hoping when my iron level improves then it'll help my hair too.

Interesting maybe I need to look at it again! I thought the quantity you need was quite a bit more than that.

Not sure I could bring myself to pollute my morning coffee with anything though!

I remember now I was also a bit grossed out by where it comes from, bones and eggshell membranes.

Yes, I'm on oestrogel and utrogestan.

Rosemary Oil massaged into scalp.

As good as stuff you buy at the chemist.

I’ve tried a few brands and this is the only one that dissolves perfectly and is tasteless. It won’t pollute your coffee I promise :)

CrystalMaisie · 13/11/2023 07:29

Hrt definitely improved mine. Oestrogel and mirena coil.

Aria999 · 13/11/2023 09:36

@AutumnNamechange please could you post a link?

I can find an 'ancient' brand but not sure it's the same and they seem to have a load of different but related products.

pharmachameleon · 13/11/2023 11:37

I would get your bloods checked and specifically ask for ferritin levels. If ferritin is below 100 I think it can reduce hair growth. Mine was 41 and I started talking ferrous fumarate tablets around a year ago. My hair is much thicker now.
I would also ask for thyroid bloods. I have hypothyroidism and this can cause thinning hair.
Also, the only medically licensed treatment for age related hair loss is minoxidil. Again I started this about 6 months ago and it seems to be working well.
I wouldn't bother with any shampoos or conditioners etc-the hair on your head is dead so applying anything to these dead hairs won't make any permanent difference.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 13/11/2023 13:23

i echo @pharmachameleon get your levels checked, ,y hair was coming out in vast amounts and it turned out I was low in Zinc and iron. I started supplements for 3 months and was fine. Anytime I notice it falling out in amounts that are above normal I just top up my zinc and Iron
Its worked for me for the last 8 years.

Perfectlystill · 13/11/2023 15:37

This is all so interesting. I think I did have low ferritin levels once so will get them checked.

Also going to buy some of that collagen linked above - thank you so much!

Thank you @AutumnNamechange !

Looks like that one isn't available where I live (USA) ☹️ but I am going to try something similar.

I can't. I have a decaf later and put my collagen in that.

Good idea.

Mid morning cup of tea it is!
