..........squealed like a piglet.

Someone please tell me it gets less painful.

I've got a high pain threshold but flippin henry, it was on a par with giving birth. My eyes watered and I started to sweat with the pain - i kid ye not.

The worst part was the lower legs strangely enough. I had gone there with the intent of doing my underarms too but after all the legs were done I just couldn't do anymore.

The staff reassured me each time is a little easier. I hope so.

Nice to know I odn't have to shave for the next month or so anyway.

Is anyone a regular waxer?

It does get a bit better but only once you've been having it done for a while and therefore have less hair to rip out! Take a couple of painkillers 20 mins before you go in, I take a couple of codeine when I have a bikini wax but I'm ok with legs. Underarms I find agony!

sleepdeprivationandme · 11/03/2008 14:18

The first time i had mine done i wanted to cry and would have told the woman to leave me alone and left with only half a leg done - but the woman was sooo scary. Oddly enough i did go back as I ws so pleased with teh results (I was like sweeny todd with a razor and it was only a matter of time before i cut my main vain)

I have them done every 3 months now and could/have fall asleep. I couldnt bear the thought of shaving now - no man stubble with waxing. Do you have anyone who does sugaring near you, I did find this less painful for some reason.

I remember the first times are terrible though. A fiend of mine used to take 2 paraceamol before she had hers done!

and people willingly do this to themselves?!

blousy · 11/03/2008 14:26

I actually enjoy having a waxing! It really doesn't hurt.
The only thing I don't like is the indignity of the bikini line.

SueW · 11/03/2008 14:27

It can depend on the person who is doing it.

I had someone do my legs a while ago and she used a metal palette knife to apply the wax. Honestly it was more painful the stuff going on than it coming off. Very different to the bottled wax someone else had used and different to the disposable wooden spatulas I think I've had in the past.

I used to find the best time to go was after exercise and a hot shower. I read somewhere once that there's a reason Brazilians are so easy to have done in Brazil- because the weather is warmer and the skin/follicles so much more open. Not sure how true that is.

I have been having them done regularly for over 10 years now and it's only bad when I've left it too long. I've never noticed the connection with cycles but then mine are hardly regular so it wouldn't be an obvious pattern anyway! I had my underarms done once and that was terrible so I am happy to carry on shaving them now and again.

Might also be worth pointing out that if you use body lotion it's best to abstain on the day of waxing, as this will stop the wax sticking properly as well.

Also watch out for ingrown hairs a week to two weeks afterwards. If I were more organised I'd try to exfoliate a bit more vigorously around that time but I usually forget.

I also prefer sugaring but haven't found anyone who does it near me .

I had my legs done when I was pregnant it didn't hurt at all. Done them myself since and thought the same, I used to use an epilator which wasn't that bad either. Never had a bikini wax though but I want to.

emmatomATO · 11/03/2008 14:30

Oh - that's all quite reassuring. Thanks. I'll definitely do the painkiller thing beforehand next time.

It definitely gets easier. You get used to the pain, like plucking your eyebrows.

HaventSleptForAYear · 11/03/2008 20:01

I have been getting them done regularly for 6 or 7 years now. I can't remember major pain (and would like to know what kind of birth you had to make it on a par???? ).

Lower legs ARE worse, despite the fact that I get them done every 4-6 weeks in the winter and every 3 in summer (full leg every other time in summer). Could never face underarms, couldn't let them grow long enough and sure it would be painful (you lot have confirmed that !)

TBH, my worst is still eyebrows, I cry every time and can't bear to do them myself. Have found a really good woman who makes it bearable, but I always get them to start by that now so the rest seems totally reasonable.

I have eczema and was getting horrible bits on my legs from the itchy regrowth with shaving - waxing is great for that.
