Haircare Regime

After 25 years, I am on the mission to grow out my pixie cut into a bob aged 45. Not peri yet but have some coarse greys and hair definitely on the dry side. Always has been very fine hair.

I make a lot of effort with my skincare twice a day, and the skin is good.

That made me wonder - should I be investing as much effort and money to have good hair? With a pixie, it was minimal.

Please share what should I be doing daily, overnight etc to have shiny, soft, manageable hair? Both care and styling products. Thank you.

I have, more than once, grown my hair out from shoulder length to waist / hip length. My advice would be:

Use hair products that do not contain silicones, parabens and other nasties. I like German brands like Sante Naturkosmetik and Jean & Len. Innersense is also a pretty good brand, but on the pricier side.

Use products that are geared towards your specific hair type and hair concerns.

Use a good after-washing leave-in product. I personally LOVE John Masters' Rose and Apricot Hair Milk, it leaves my very long, and naturally dry, hair so soft and bouncy.

Don't use too many products...you really don't need to. I'd say your basics should be a good shampoo and conditioner, an after-washing leave-in conditioner, and a hair oil / serum. If you're so inclined, you could also add a hair mask and whatever you need in terms of styling your hair.

Some other tips:
Use a comb instead of a brush.
Comb your hair before washing it.
Eat well - lots of proteins and healthy animal fats!

Have a look at styles to get you through the "Justin Bieber Hair" stage . Otherwise you get to that horrible stage where you cannot do anything with it and you'll end up running back to your haidresser to have it cropped again and the massive relief (Can you tell I have done this too ? )

My hair is fragile (menopusal) greying , I grew out dye as I grew the length , luckily my grey hairs came through like highlights rather than a solid root growth .
I used to use Paul Mitchell The Conditioner (leave in) but it started irritating my scalp .
Olaplex is working well on my hair at the moment (0+3 then the shampoo/condition) once a week or so .

Morrocon Oil as a prewash or applied after washing

Thank you.

Any recommendations for high street type products? Also why are silicones bad? Thank you!

Silicones coat the hair presumably to seal in any active ingredients but they can make your hair dull . Then you need a detoxifying shampoo .
TBH , it is something I have never thought about . I try to use something that won;t irritate my scalp (and careful not to apply conditioner onto my scalp)

Last year I had major hair loss after illness and used Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser 2x week to begin with .
I;m using Aveda Shampure at the moment which is one of my Holy Grail shampoos .

I don;t use styling products
