Find my 15 Yr autistic DD the perfect jeans

Hi All, since I stopped dressing her, my DD has only ever worn tracksuits bottoms (her choice). Recently she has felt a bit more open to wearing jeans but has sensory issues. I would love to expand her wardrobe a bit. Can anyone recommend some that fit the bill? She is an adult size (12-14), so no kids clothes. Any tight fitting jeans are a definite no. She likes plain clothes, so no rips or embellishments. If the jeans are soft and not stiff, that would really help. No flares wide leg either or too baggy. Just straight-ish or Mom / boyfriend style that don’t cling to the legs too much. Darker denim, not pale. Budget under £80. Thank you in advance!!!

How about M&S? Lots of styles, straight, cigarette etc, lots of denim shades too. They tend to be cut a bit looser than other high street brands so could work for your daughter.

Peablockfeathers · 11/11/2023 08:27

What about the waist band? I find that probably the most sensory part of jeans (if that makes sense)- elasticated waist? High waist?

Newname2308 · 11/11/2023 08:45

Our daughters sound very similar! Same age and issues.

My DD found H&M mom style jeans comfortable, so for ages just rotated two identical pairs. They have a really big selection of jeans, and their online ordering is really good - my DD really struggles with decision making, so I often buy a range of styles and sizes to try on at home.
My DD has also taken to cargo trousers which are really popular just now. So she manages to wear something trendy whilst being really comfortable, and that makes her feel good. Maybe your DD would like them too?
Good luck!

I'd also suggest M+S. Loads of styles and colours and all displayed together.

Notanother0nee · 11/11/2023 08:58

I just got some jeans from new look for work- the Hannah ones- straight leg ankle grazer. They are cut comfortably around the hips which is my usual sticking point with jeans without feeling too wide. I got them in black but i’m fairly sure they have other colours too. Really cheap as well.

New look is teen friendly too- I’d have been mortified at 15 wearing anything from M&S 🙃

Hi, I have adhd and SPD, really struggle with jeans as I hate the feeling of them literally like being sawn in half never mind the weird fabric feel ha.
.One of my daughters is a John Lewis stylist and has the same ND profile as me, she recommended Levi Ribcage jeans, she and her sister both have them (we are all ND other daughter is asd). John Lewis stock them but they are cheaper on Amazon if you know your size.
I also have some Halara jeans which are Jegging -y but look like jeans, they have some that look like joggers but might not be cool enough for a teen. They are super soft tho and lack the hard waist of jeans .

Mummadeze · 11/11/2023 09:42

@Peablockfeathers she likes wearing things around her hips, not her waist. So waist band just needs to accommodate that. But we usually size up so she can wear them further down.

@Newname2308 they do sound similar, thank you for the suggestions

@Twinklewonderkins thank you. I have been thinking about Levi and Halara so appreciate these recommendations. She is not ‘cool’, comfort is key!

If she can cope with the shame then I echo M&S jeans. I struggle with clothes but find the Sienna jeans soft and comfortable.

Helenloveslee4eva · 11/11/2023 09:51

Just to add a thought to the mix - dungarees are very much in at the moment and would be very comfortable. They’d be a good stepping stone from stretchy stuff to structured fabrics.

NealBrose · 11/11/2023 09:52

ASOS have a small range of elasticated waist jeans from brands that are marketed to younger women. Might be a half way step from tracksuit to traditional jeans?

I am really sensory averse to lots of things and also find M&S ones work for me, shape and comfort.

The out of the box suggestion is maternity jeans as they are usually really soft and have the elasticated waist band which she can hide with a top. I have a friend who only wore maternity trousers as she found them so much comfier. I hated going back into normal clothes after having my kids as everything suddenly felt so restrictive after those.

Soggydog · 11/11/2023 10:01

I think the other issue is having a plan to work through that initial discomfort when they are initially put on which does ease off. Maybe put them on a radiator so they are softer when they first go on or have a sensory plan as to what to do to give them a good try before they come off.

FMSucks · 11/11/2023 10:06

I recently bought a pair of Levi’s and the fabric is very soft so would recommend too.

Twinklewonderkins · 11/11/2023 10:12

@Mummadeze I tried on ASD daughters Levi ribcage last week (as I am Jean sceptic) and was really surprised. They are high waist so don’t cut in when you bend and were just nice. Lucy and Yak also have jeans which a lot of ND people like, and have a cool alt thing about them.

SlothCat · 11/11/2023 10:24

First post and dragged out my Mumsnet password just to say I really echo the M&S suggestions. I struggle with jeans (am also Autistic) but have worn M&S for a few years and they're so comfy! There's loads of different types, in all different colours. Before that I used to wear New Look which are also a good option as their jeans are quite soft.

PinkBuffalo · 11/11/2023 10:25

I am also autistic and sensory issues
on the rare occasion I wear jeans I have a couple of pull on soft pairs from cotton traders they are very soft I highly recommend

funkystars123 · 11/11/2023 10:27

My DD is 15 and autistic, she also has very big thighs and a fairly small waist... jeans are a nightmare!

She has a pair of New Look mom style that she likes, have them in two colours but overall she lives in leggings.

I might try combats.... hadn't thought if that!

Mummadeze · 11/11/2023 14:34

Thanks so much everyone :)

I can't do button up jeans. I have some white stuff pull on denim jeggings that are pretty soft and comfy, but I'm still out of them and into my trackies and soon as I walk through the door.

SoShallINever · 11/11/2023 21:23

I find Next jeans really soft and comfy.

TokyoSushi · 11/11/2023 21:37

I don't think that you can particularly tell where jeans are from unless they have an obvious label so she could definitely 'get away with' M&S (all of key jeans are M&S, but that's ok because I'm 44!)

They do have a really lovely selection and also have a super soft range which might work. Hope you can get her sorted OP, you sound like a lovely Mum!

Sprig1 · 11/11/2023 21:52

Tu straight leg with stretch. I am sensitive and love these.
