Pain under UV lamps for gel nails?!

Complete newbie to gel nails, had it first done this August & loved it so have had new nails done pretty much every month since - they’re tending to last 3 weeks then chip so I’ve been peeling them off (I know).

The last 2 times I’ve had very focused pain in my nails when they put the UV lamp on - not my fingers, just my nails & it’s like they’re on fire for a few seconds, a very searing pain. So is this normal? Does it mean I need to stop & can’t have gels in the future?

It's if they put the gel on too thick. If you tap your fingers when under the light it stops.

Possibly thin nails caused by electric filing/peeling off shellac.
You might need time to allow the nails to grow out to be thicker again.
Sorry - happened to me too - avoid anywhere that files off shellac down to the nail with an electric drill.
V good place in NW London - where do u live?

This does happen - it is very brief- there is a name for it but can’t remember

If you're peeling it off yourself you may have removed a layer of nail so they are thinner. Possible cause

Sounds like heat spikes. Just push your fingers down into the lamp when it happens. It helps will the pain

Spikes! That’s the word I was looking for

Yep just push fingertips down into the table and the pain will ease.

I got this! I didn’t know it was a thing! My nails hadn’t been gelled before and my nails are quite thick. Have had the same experience the following two times.

Ah ok glad it’s not just me! I’m in Cheshire. I’ve decided I need to take them off properly rather than peeling them off myself 🙈 so it’s not doing me any harm as such?! I’m a bit paranoid because I’ve had skin cancer & the combination of a UV lamp & pain is pushing all my worry buttons! So heat spikes it’s an actual thing then?

Heat spikes are pretty normal, they're caused by an exothermic reaction. Ask your nail tech if the lamp has a lower power mode which can reduce it. You can also wait for the heat spike, take your nails out of the lamp and press your fingertips hard into the table till it passes, then put them back in and cure fully. Peeling off your gels will most definitely not be helping as you'll be taking layers of the nail plate - please stop doing this!

I get it really badly from hard gel, my nails are naturally very thin and weak but currently even worse from overfiling during my college course.
