Tallow skincare

I've trialled fierce nature orange tallow this week. I use Tret and I get very dry in winter. I find the idea of the product a bit gross but then I do eat meat.... It's very rich and absorbs well.

I dislike their Spf claims (would never use that) and the whole anti toxic but never specifying what this means message. But I hate to say... I'm like the tallow.

Anyone else tried it?

There was a tin of face cream found in the ruins of Pompeii complete with finger marks and after analysis, it was found that it was mostly comprised of animal fat.

LegallyBrunette01 · 12/11/2023 15:27

Me - I love it, it is so nourishing. Have been making my own tallow face cream for the past 3 years.

This is fascinating!

I’m interested in trying tallow after reading good thanks. Do you have links to any products you would recommend @bryceQ ?

bryceQ · 12/11/2023 19:29

I'm trying Fierce Nature one - the orange blossom.

I like the consistency but don't find it better than my Korean skincare....it's a 7 out of 10 for me I think.

But it works for me. I'm using tret from highstreetpharma and been using tallow cream along with a sunscreen and it works well for me

EveSix · 13/11/2023 15:31

Swedish army standard issue moisturising block for use in the field is tallow. It is divine!
Can also be used for cooking at a push.

hamstersarse · 13/11/2023 15:36

I just use tallow from the butchers!

I've been using it for a few years and it is the best moisturizer I have ever used - absorbs instantly and fixes small blemishes almost immediately.

I can't for the life of me understand why someone would prefer the synthetic toxic waste that is in commercial moisturisers. As pp has said, this is what moisturiser always was!

bryceQ · 15/11/2023 22:04

Thanks for sharing! What does it smell like without essential oils?

How long have you been using it for @bryceQ ?

2 weeks.

I use Tret and I'm a dry person so it suits me well as i use loads of moisturiser

@bryceQ I bought the unscented one and have only used it twice so far. I’m surprised how little I need to use, but it still doesn’t sink totally into my skin so I’ve only used it at night.

Pinkyzstar · 18/11/2023 15:18

Can you guide how to get their products online?

I just used this site

This is intriguing. Are the products nicely scented? I'm getting intrusive thoughts of my dad eating tripe and dripping.

bryceQ · 18/11/2023 17:01

The sweet orange one is nice... I don't smell like roast potatoes. But if you have sensitivity to essential oils this could be an issue

Delighted to have spotted this thread.

For those of you who make it, do you mind taking me through what you do?

I want to make it for personal use, but I'm also looking at making a balm for my DD's mild eczema. Also a nappy rash/barrier balm for my Dgrandson.

Badtard · 04/02/2024 08:12

My post above was for @LegallyBrunette01 and @hamstersarse

LegallyBrunette01 · 06/02/2024 15:57

@Badtard

Ahh I have just seen this, so I double render my suet in a water and salt solution. I remove any red parts from the suet and then mince it first (the mincing is not totally necessary) before rendering- feels like a scene out of Fight Club 😆 Render on low for all day.

Once rendered, strain using a muslin cloth allow to cool, the tallow will separate from the water. Render again in salt water until tallow has melted down. Allow to cool.

Once the tallow is firm and separated from the water, dry thoroughly. Do not leave any moisture in the tallow, as the finished product will go mouldy.

Then mix 75% tallow with 25% carrier oil (almond, olive, coconut) and add a few drops of essential oil - depends what your preference is I like mix of vanilla and lemon.

Good luck!

Badtard · 10/02/2024 10:23

@LegallyBrunette01 thank you so much for this!

I've made my first batch last week with jojoba oil (actually had to top up with rose hip because I didn't have enough). I used tallow from Etsy which looked really white and clean, following a recipe using oz's - it sounds a similar ratio to yours.

I also added lavender and frankincense oil - both for odour reasons but also for the essential oil properties.

The stuff goes a hell of a long way doesn't it!? I used the same amount as my old moisturiser but I was an oil slick and greasy. Since using less it's absorbing beautifully but I notice that I'm oily on my forehead like never before.

Maybe the jojoba was too much?
Maybe I need a different oil.

I'm also getting wafts of the 'organic' smell of Tallow so perhaps i should have added geranium as well? I want to avoid citrus as I've read it's photosensitive (not that there's much sun in Wales!).

LegallyBrunette01 · 13/02/2024 21:02

It really does, a fingertip is all you need. It is trial and error. I wouldn't use anything else, due to its nuturing all natural properties.

Badtard · 13/02/2024 22:54

@LegallyBrunette01 does your cream give you wafts of beef fat? I don't want to stop using it.

Jacktheplumber · 06/04/2024 16:22

Hi bryce, i agree regarding the spf rating, tallow naturally has an spf but it is only relatively low and unless zinc is added it is no good especially for application on children. I would however recommend grassfedfarmers, they have a website and also sell on etsy, i have used there products many times and they are amazing, no added ingredients and 5star rated.
