14 year old daughter - upper lip hair removal

Jdmac47 · 07/11/2023 23:00

14 year old daughter keeps askjng how to remove her upper lip hair. She is quite fair skinned but her lip hair is noticeable and is bothering her. I have never had the need to sort similar so no idea where to start. What is best way to remove or make less noticeable? And please don't say shaving makes it grow back thicker as it is a known myth.

I LOVE those eyebrow razors for this purpose!

Laser when she is old enough and make sure she sees someone properly qualified, until then threading.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Waxing and threading gives me a bright maroon skin moustache for a while after and sometimes spots after. If you're trying either for the first time do it on a Friday night with no plans to give it chance to calm down. Plenty of people are fine though.

Lots of fab jml type facial razors in boots, TK maxx etc these are good as you can do it as often as needed without further outlay.

Definitely worth seeing a gp as it can be a symptom of pcs ovaries etc

SausageAndEggSandwich · 09/11/2023 21:36

I used to get it threaded but my god it hurts.

Recently I went to a new place who does waxing and it was much less painful. Still a bit stingy but tolerable.

The worst is the stick thingy - having to go over the same area several times. Horrible.

Bleaching still leaves you with a moustache, just a blonde one

Creams and shaving give me a rash.

Hot wax at a beauty salon, the type they peel off not the strips much less painful than threading, normal wax or the torture device twisty device from Amazon.

SmokeyToo · 10/11/2023 00:58

@Usuallyjustscrolling Thank you for this - I've just had it delivered by Amazon. I appreciate the recommendation and as a hairy-faced woman, I salute you! 😁

If she has dark hair and fair skin, then another vote for laser. Yes, it costs - but it works. 6 to 8 sessions and it's done (might need a single top up session every 10 years or so - I had it done in 2009 and 6 hairs have recently reappeared). Waxing or threading are a lot cheaper per session but you have to keep doing it every few weeks - and there's visible regrowth between each one. Much more painful, too.

Badatthis · 10/11/2023 08:32

Threading or waxing irritates my skin so I'm left with tiny spots for about a week where each hair grew and then they grow back.

I would do an electric shaver for now and get a home laser device for the longer term.

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 10/11/2023 08:34

Facial wax strips for sensitive skin. Or go to a salon first to have it removed by an expert.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/11/2023 08:36

Home laser devices aren't actually laser, they are IPL. Good, but not nearly as effective - unlikely to be permanent.

Snoeberry · 10/11/2023 09:09

I used to bleach mine which worked well and have also used facial waxing straps.

I had electrolysis at one point- this is expensive and painful and I would not recommend! Not sure why I did it in retrospect.

WeightoftheWorld · 10/11/2023 09:17

Hi, I'm very hairy (genetics) but also fair skinned with thick dark hair, great combo on my head, a pain everywhere else!

I'd recommend waxing as a first step tbh. It's not very painful and is over quick. If she tolerates that well then I'd recommend threading as the best option longer term/as she ages (in the absence of more permanent solutions like laser, I'm just talking about short term cosmetic options). If she's never had the area waxed before though I'd recommend that over threading first. I get my whole face threaded since I was about 19 and it's all fine but the upper lip area really does sting like hell.

Shalopea · 10/11/2023 09:22

You can get a spring twizzler sort of device off Amazon for about a pound. So easy, cheap and effective.

Weridmouse · 10/11/2023 09:30

Threading or wax (prefer waxing as threading is more painful for me)

EverybodysALebowski · 10/11/2023 09:59

As a teen I found threading to be super painful, wax was messy and led to breakouts, and bleach frequently burned my face.

Lumea/IPL didn't exist when I was a teen, but I would do that, if she is fair-skinned (it works best when there's a contrast between the hair colour and the skin). If you can swing the cost, big holiday sales are coming up and if you watch you'll be able to get one at a much lower price than usual, and certainly for far less than a course of laser treatments. Regular use every two weeks at first, then touchups afterwards. Plus, you could share it for the household and use it on legs, etc. I've had my current one for years and it's still going strong.

Lumea was perfect for my dark life-long moustache on fair skin. (Didn't get rid of chin hairs, but those are different.) I so wish I'd had it in my teen years.
