Thats cool mumofjandp afternoon tea is my fav. I do have one day in the spa. I have been to Scotland four times, more over the Fort William area stayed in Strontian last August. So suggestions would be good. I`m TTC so indoor entertainment may have to suffice !

nb jaeger sizing comes up big

mumofdjandp · 11/03/2008 15:46

tee hee is it just one day you are there or overnight? lots to do locally but also lits at G itself

I can tell you all my local favourite tea shops!

brookeslay · 11/03/2008 15:59

To make it worthwhile we are going for four days we live in Shropshire and we`ll take a slow drive up, stopping for lunch aiming to get there around 3 or 4.

So first day is a flop day. Then we have two days to kill either in the hotel or around and about. 1 day in the spa and then home

My favourite cake ever in Soctland was at Urquart Castle yum. The Gleneagles scones are soaked in whisky so might have to force myself to eat them.

The afternoon tea at Gleneagles is scrummy and (relatively) good value. As many dinky cucumber sandwiches and clotted cram and jam scones as you can stuff into your face, washed down by a bottomless pot of tea!

mumofdjandp · 11/03/2008 16:27

it really is lvely up here

im trash at fashion so cant help you there though

I wont wreck your thread but youre welcome to CAT me if you want some local info

nailpolish · 11/03/2008 16:31

if i were going to gleneagles i think id never venture out of the hotel (maybe for a stroll around but thatd be it) couldnt tear myself away from the giant bed or poolside (or perhaps, the bar)

nailpolish · 11/03/2008 16:31

its a fab place for people watching

brookeslay · 11/03/2008 16:37

Will do mumofjandp, I love my scenery and Scottish views and I the people are all friendly. Must do`s are visiting a castle to keep DP happy.

Might book him a clay pigeon shot as a suprise to stop him from being bored when I get pampered they have opening offers for the new spa if you fancy a treat.

prettybird desserts and cakes are my favourite thing so I won`t need to hold back !

doesnt he play golf? tsk!

prettybird · 11/03/2008 16:37

Oh - and don't even think of going downstairs for breakfast.

The dining room breakfast is in the big anonymous room and is semi-self service and nothing special. The room service breakfast, however, is wheeled in on a wee trolley and has the big domes on the plates to keep your cooked breakfast warm.

So you can sit and enjoy it whilst wearing your nice Gleneagles dressing gown.

brookeslay · 11/03/2008 16:47

I had read that about the dining room
( regarding breakfast) on trip advisor. I love my Breakfast in Bed so even if it was swish I`ll opt for the latter.

Be even nicer if it was a young man in a kilt wheeling it in. Went to Cameron House last year ( only for lunch) lot of staff wore kilts.

He doesnt play golf nailpolish as He says it might make me a golf widow if he gets into it. I did offer a couple of times to pay for lessons , but hes happy clay pigeon shooting. The four wheel driving looks fun and sploshing in mud would please him no end.

he doesn't play golf?!

however are you going to get rid of him and enjoy your spa treatments ?

brookeslay · 11/03/2008 17:01

He loves walking or taking a mountian bike out. Then I will book either the clay pigeon shooting or off road driving. Though I`m sure he can prop the bar up and have some well deserved R&R.

He is very good at mingling and will probably know alot of staff by name by the time weve left. Ive already heard lot about Alyth (sp?) who can get things organised.

Smart casual is the best way to dress. Gleneagles is actually surprisingly unstuffy.

Dh used to be a member of the golf club (hence we managed to stay a couple of times at reasonable rates ) and the guys in the shirt, tie and jackets were always the visitors!

Unfortuantely dh has given up hismembership as he says the dutues of being a dad were taking up too much time! I actually used to enjoy the time he went off for a game and I would have some "quality" time with ds!

I've alsways wanted to eat at Andrew Fairley's. I had a meal at One Devonshire when he was still there and it was superb (better than Amaryllis, the Gordon Ramsay incarnation of One Devonshire). Am thinking of presuading dh to go there for the weekend of our 10th wedding anniversary in May and splurgoing out!

expatinscotland · 11/03/2008 17:49

it is a good spa. my folks spent a few days there, and my dad was permanently wearing golfwear - ugggh! although my mother did persuade him to change for dinner, at least.

she wore clothes appropriate to a 64-year-old woman so nothing to advise there .

brookeslay · 11/03/2008 18:05

We are eating at Andrew Fairleys Ive read the sample menus and they all sound droolingly gorgeous. I have eaten at a few good restaurants and some nice ones nr Ludlow. I think this is my first Michelin 2*.

The trip though is a good excuse to buy some things for my much depleted wardrobe any excuse ..huh !

I know what you mean about golfwear expat.. I did date a man who either dressed for rugby or golf .

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 11/03/2008 18:55

oh, believe me, golfwear's gotten far, erm, chicer since the 1970s.

ever see footage of old Ryder Cups?

shocking, those excuses for garments they used to wear.

prettybird · 11/03/2008 20:26

I'm about you eating at Andrew Fairley's. All the reviews I have read have said that it is expensive but worth it.

Make sure your dh lets the hotel know it's your birthday when you are there - the hotel is very good at the wee extra touches (it can afford to be! )

Given that it is Scotland in March, I would also take lots of thin layers. It could be warm(ish) but it could also be b**y cold and miserable.

There is (or was) also a Brora cashmere shop in the hotel, so you could treat yourself to some extra layers if you are cold!

soapbox · 11/03/2008 20:39

Jaeger have got some lovely things naily - used to be very old fashioned so I wouldn't have thought to look there!

I love this dress

brookeslay · 12/03/2008 10:45

Prettybird Im sure DP will tell them its my birthday, if not Ill buy myself a big badge or I could hum " happy birthday" lol. I`ll smuggle for you some chocolates and a signed Andrew Fairley napkin.

My sister tied balloons around her waist with a Happy Birthday banner worn as sash.Though we were only at a Warners hotel for her girlie birthday away so it didn`t matter.

Ive asked for cash from my family so Ill have a little holiday fund. I`ve read about the Harrods of Scotland House of Bruar in that area so it might be worth a trip.

Ohh lovely Jaeger dress soapbox but not sure how the length would fit a shorty like me. Jackets seem fine and I know they do alterations. I`ll see if JL come up trumps first

Just back at Weekend from my trip. It was a lovely hotel and the staff were excellent. The meal was delicious, though just made it due to a wardrobe malfunction ! My zip broke and had to hire a dress. The valet had one in my size brought up to me in five minutes.!
Thanks for all your suggestions re the trip again.
