Does a completely Waterproof jacket actually exist out there?

I have two already but none of them actually "WORK". They are Regatta and Trespass. Each of them was fantastic for a little while and then bam - became porous. I understand that washing them can take the waterproof coating off, so I haven't washed either of them in two winters so the rain must be washing the coating off lol 😄 I do spot clean them at the collar, cuffs and pockets though.

Anyway, I suppose there are some very good reliable waterproof jackets out there, but where are they to be found, any recommendations? I'm guessing that the waterproof coating wears off eventually though so it might be worth it trying a recoating spray.

Budget up to £200 if that is a reasonable amount. Thanks.

Thanks very much everyone for your suggestions. I will check them out over the weekend in my quest for waterproof jacket of the decade!

I brought a Regatta one this year and it's good walking around London but I doubt it will be much good against Storm Ciaran in the Peak District for example. But Regatta have different grades of proofing which us signified by the number on the garment. Mine is 300 (I think) which is mid-range medium proofing. The bigger the number the higher the waterproofing.

STBXH has a North Face jacket that's performed well. Jack Wolfskin makes performance jackets but since Brexit they've been harder to get hold of.

Thanks - about the nikwax - would I just wash the jacket using that and NO detergent? What temp do you think? I have a product I got in Regatta shop last year, it is a reproofer probably similar to nikwax but probably not as good, I lost the details and the print is too small on the bottle!

I'll have a look at the recommended jacket brands mentioned.

Never ever use detergent to wash a waterproof! Always soap. You can use Nikwax tech wash (basically soap) or pure washing soap. Then every few washes you reproof them with TX Direct or whatever is recommended for the jacket you buy.

Proper waterproof walking jackets - not “showerproof” or “water resistant” are genuinely fully waterproof. Look for one with a breathable waterproof membrane such as Goretex, Hydrodry or AquaDry. Also choose a style that keeps water out from zips, pockets etc (storm flaps over zips).

Yes - head to a fishing vessel supply shop! I have a fisherman's yellow jacket and it's completely waterproof, but it's not breathable material. All depends on need

Yes, I have an orange fisherman's jacket which will stand any kind of weather, and possibly also float!
Building supplies stores also often sell high vi's coats which are cheap, warm and waterproof.
Northern most stylish option, but I am a peasant so I don't care.

Didriksons fan here. I have had very good experience with Seasalt but two of my Seasalt macs have just given up the waterproof ghost after a good decade of use (washed and waterproofed as per instructions) and I've replaced with a Didriksons Marta-Lisa that I can wear a warmer down jacket underneath and I've got a Didriksons parka that I've had for the last 5+ years that has been brilliant for very cold/very wet weather.

I've worn a Seasalt plant hunter coat for over 7 years and the filling has finally gotten to thin and no longer waterproof despite using Nikwax tech wash etc.
I have now bought one of their Janelle coats and it is amazing. It ends about an inch from the top of my wellybobs and has kept me very dry but not too hot. The wind doesn't go through it either. I bought it from Harts of Stur for £120 in the woodland colour, a khaki green, and I love it.

Yocal · 04/11/2023 18:53

I noticed Harts of Stur has some very good discounts on Seasalt waterproofs at mo. £180 Seasalt coats reduced to £60. That's a very good price for coats that last as long as posters have said.

I just got one of vinted as I'm planning on dropping a couple of dress sizes so will invest next year in the lifetime waterproof coat.

Has anyone seen G Lab coats? They're gorgeous, but similar in price to Canada Goose. 😬

Barbour waterproofs are highly recommended.
