Retinols - the ordinary, retirides, what else to combat menopause?

Hello! Quite new to this, and trying to combat the skin effects of premature menopause.

I’ve recently switched from a l’oreal retinol+niacinamide cream that didn’t seem to be having much effect and restarted using The Ordinary - Granactive retinoid 5%. It doesn’t irritate my face, but also didn’t make much difference last time I used it (I tried for a few months). Though skin might be worse without the retinoids!

Is there anything else non-prescription I could be using (UK) that’s stronger, at a similar price?

and does it not being irritating mean it isn’t working? (It does irritate my hands/décolletage so not looking to use anything stronger there)

I’ll be in Spain in a few months and from reading mumsnet reckon I should buy some of the lowest strength Retirides cream. Do they keep for months sealed or do they have a short expiry, wondering if I can feasibly buy a few to last me?

thanks for advice! I’m due to start hrt soon so that may help a bit too.

How long have you been using retinols, it usually requires six months to see results but a slight improvement in terms of skin turnover in a skin cycle of usually six weeks. No irritation doesn't necessarily mean it's not working, we all have a different tolerance threshold.

Formulation matters a lot when it comes to retinoids, and generally doesn't come cheap. A brand like Medik8 who specialise in retinoids are your best bet, the crystal retinaldehyde is especially good and as close as you can get to prescription strength. Alternatively, SkinCeuticals or Paula's Choice.

Prescription retinoids tend to stay good for a year or two but if you're new to retinols and are a bit clueless about them you're better off going through the subscription services where you have support and help when needed. It's a medication and does require some supervision.

I know all of the above options are not cheap so not really answering your question. I've heard good things about Geek & Gorgeous A Game which is a retinaldehyde like Medik8 so that could be an option at a lower price.

I’ve tried Retirides, and when my parents visited Spain this year and asked if I wanted them to pick some more up, I said no! I found it a bit too harsh, and - on balance - I think I’d rather use a more enjoyable product even if the results aren’t as good.

I really liked the Luna oil from Sunday Riley, and am now using their A+ high dose retinoid serum which is really good as well. I have a Medik8 retinol serum in my stash (from last year’s Cult Beauty advent calendar) which is next on the list.
