My DD will be turning 12 just before Christmas and had asked for makeup, which she has just started showing an interest in. I only ever wear eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara so I have absolutely no clue about anything else makeup related! I want to steer her away from foundation etc she has really nice skin and I don't think she needs anything too heavy. I got her a huge eyeshadow palette and I'll get her some lip glosses, is there anything else that people can recommend for her age?

Mascara - get a nice tubing one she can take off with water easily

Boots Natural Collection is cheap as chips and isn’t OTT in terms of the colours.

You could add a mirror, bag, brushes and make-up wipes to the gift too.

Kittycat43 · 31/10/2023 21:52

A nice BB cream and mascara and maybe a w7 eyeshadow palette?

theduchessofspork · 31/10/2023 21:56

Tubing mascara (in brown if she’s fair) subtle natural eyeshadow (like a light moonshine type colour with a little shimmer) crème blusher (unless she’s very pink cheeked) and a sheer tinted lipstick (like a balm but with a bit of colour). Compact mirror. Bag to put it in.

If you give her a big eyeshadow set or eyeliner etc, I package that separately and be clear that’s for events only (which probably means shopping with her mates on a Saturday at her age) and the makeup bag stuff is for everyday.

Glossier is a nicely understated range for younger teens - it never looks caked on, and the marketing is all about looking like yourself, not plastering on a mask. I got my god daughter some Cloud Paint blush and Boy Brow and a lip balm last Christmas.

Thank you all for the suggestions 🙂 can I ask what BB cream and tubing mascara is please? I've already got her a light up mirror, makeup bag and wipes and going to get her some nice brushes, it's just the actual makeup part that I have no clue about 😂

If it was me id buy this and the benefit set ive listed above, and some nice skin cleanser

DD wears a moisturiser or BB cream as a base. Whilst she likes receiving make up she really enjoys going out and shopping for it and trying the testers so dont underestimate getting a few starter bits and then a gift card so she can go and have a play and choose some bits herself.

DD is also really into skin care and loves face masks, pore strips, she even asked for a foot bath for Christmas which took me back to when my mum had one in the 90s. Teens nowadays seem much more focussed on skin care and natural looking makeup than we were when I was younger

Erborian is a korean skin brand that does amazing BB and CC creams that are really light, might be a good idea

I’d ditch the wipes and get her a lovely cleansing balm, teach her that part of wearing makeup is taking off in a way that looks after her lovely skin.

Smurfmurf · 01/11/2023 06:34

if she’s into social media at all then I’d look at some of the viral stuff at the moment such as BPerfect and PLouise. If you’ve got tik tok, use the TT shop.

Personally, I’d ditch the wipes and introduce a basic 3 step cleansing routine. Cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Even if it’s a basic kit from Boots. Wipes don’t clean the skin properly.
