Black to a Christening?

poppynic · 10/03/2008 11:37

I've been invited to my first ever Christening event (and, incidentally, this will be my first "religious" event in the UK.)

I have one outfit that doesn't involve cords or jeans. It is a long black skirt with a fish tail and dark olive silk printed blouse. Is it okay to wear dark colours to a Christening or are they considered too sombre for the occasion?

I have recently seen a lovely illustrated version of Alice in Wonderland and thought this might be okay for a pressie?

Any advice welcome.

One black item is fine. Head-to-toe black isn't. Is it a floor length skirt, though? Might be a bit much if so. You don't want to look too formal.

Present sounds lovely.

Oh hanaflower - now you've really confused me. I (stupidly) hadn't even considered it would be in the normal service - checking the invite it's at the church, at 10.30 on Sunday - so I guess it will be.

I wore a black skirt to my DD's christening, with a dark green top. Your outfit sounds beautiful, I love fish tail skirts.

The present sounds perfect. One of my DD's now favourite pressies is book of AA Milne poems, which she adores. Much better than useless ornaments which end up in the loft!

Thanks dizzydixies and jetgirl - that's just what I wanted to hear. I will have to buy a pair of shoes and that's already more than I can manage in 5 days ! (tragic, I know)

Hanaflower - you are a "font" of information. Thank you. I have no idea what sort of church it is but it's good to be warned.

Maybe I should take my umbrella - I have a gold one I am very fond of with an automatic pop up - and pop down! - mechanism.

Actually, blouse should survive drizzle as my dp put it in the washing machine!!!!!! After much drama from me, it actually came out fine!! Still, I think the principle about taking care of my investment shopping and most-loved garment, was worth guilting into him with floods of tears.

As for the illustrations, I'm not sure - I just saw a copy in the library while I was chasing after 13 mo and trying to organise 5 yo - will have to actually find a good one in the shops.
