Hi all,

I’m due to have a rhinoplasty in a week or so.

I’ve done quite a bit of research about the procedure itself and the after-care, and had a couple of consultations with the surgeon who is doing the operation.

I’ll be staying overnight at the hospital after my operation, which has also reassured me a bit, but I’m still feeling a bit nervous. I’ve also booked the 2 weeks post-operation off work.

Do you have any words of wisdom or tips/advice to help make sure the recovery process is as comfortable as possible? Thanks so much.

Hi all,

I’m just bumping in case anyone is able to offer any advice. Thanks!

Not that particular op, but I can recommend using a travel pillow if you need to sleep upright for a few days. Also, have straws on hand as it is easier to drink.

3rd/4th day isn't as bad as it looks and promise it goes down. Ask to use arnica tablets and just be careful about post op infection. Other than that, high pillows, plenty of rest and avoid rigorous movements. Good luck.

Also, if you’re allowed to use it, the saline sterimar nasal sprays are helpful. Oh and don’t wear tops that need to be pulled over your head.

My bruising was worse than I had anticipated and took about 3 weeks to be covetable with concealer, I am very pale though and bruise easily.

The first week before I got the splint off was a bit miserable to be honest, trouble sleeping and didn’t want to go out obviously - get plenty books & TV lined up and some nice food in would be my advice.

Good luck - I can imagine you are quite nervous but I’m sure it will go well and you’ll be delighted 😀

Where are you getting it done, if you dont mind saying?

I second arnica tablets!

I found it very hard to keep nose clean as they stipulated after the op. Careful how you go - I passed out trying to clean it it hurt so much. Gave up trying and left it, consultant wasn't happy but what was I suppose to do...

Sterimar wasn't suggested by them But I found it's great stuff.

My self confidence went up so much it was very much worth it. No perfect button nose but it suits my face much better. Forever glad it was finally done.

Oh one thing, the general anaesthetic upset my bowels, so have some laxatives available...

Thanks so much for all of your replies. It’s really helpful to hear your tips and experiences - it’s definitely helping me to feel a bit more prepared! surfergirl sorry to hear about your experience - that sounds painful! So happy to hear you’re pleased with the result though, that’s great news.

Can I ask as well, for anyone who has had a rhinoplasty, how did you find eating and sleeping after the surgery?

I’m a bit worried about what eating and sleeping will be like for the day of surgery and the next few days following the surgery. I’ll be staying overnight at the hospital after my surgery.

I've bought a travel neck pillow to wear whilst I’m asleep as I’m a side-sleeper normally. Hopefully the travel pillow will help to keep my movements in check when I sleep. I’ve heard that it’s best to eat soft foods after surgery, so I’ve stocked up on things like yogurt, soft fruits, pasta/noodles/rice and soup. I just wondered if there’s anything else I should be thinking about. Thanks!
