I need smart casual outfit for christening

I've got a christening in April and it's for the second child of a friend. Went to the first child's christening and felt massively overdressed in brown silk skirt and cream blouse with tea roses on.

This time I'm thinking nautical? Navy trousers and striped top? Am I way off mark?

Btw I am short and curvy!

I was thinking this top and trousers with some red accessories (maybe red neck scarf and red pumps)

Is that too "holiday"? Should it be heels rather than pumps?

As you can see I'm on a budget!

link not working but if short and curvy you do not want to wear stripes, oh no

sounds like you need one notch up from jeans (eg skirt cardi and boots), not as far as skirt blouse and heels.

BibiThree · 10/03/2008 19:30

Okay, no to stripes, I was already guessing no to flat shoes too.
I have arather lovely pair of knee length chocolate brown boots, so maybe something to go with them> Wrap dresses, which apparently suit everyone, do not suit me.

Anyone else?

Hate nautical myself but that's no help to you ! Have to say I would agree with no stripes. Can you do smart trousers, non-matching jacket and then a dressy top? No links sorry - I'm hopeless at it and would have no idea where to look online?

I do have a lovely pair of black trousers I wore to a wedding in October - and the halter top I wore with them, but having seen the photos, the halter top is back in the wardrobe never to come out again!

Bibi - I find christening's really difficult to dress for. Weddings dress up. Night time parties dress up, but daytime christenings are really difficult.

The link isn't working so I can't see your nautical outfit, but my advice would be go simple and classic. For my sons christening I wore cream skirt and black cardigan. As a guest to others I wore black trousers and a dressyish top (coral colour with a tie neck). I find that really nice coats are good for christenings as in the church you don't tend to take them off, and IMO that is when you feel most self conscious about your outfit.

Its my ds baptism in April.

I am wearing a Gina Baccone skirt that is fitted at hip and flares out and is covered entirely in cream sequins.I am wearing it with a Per Una brown velvet fitted jacket and cream v neck long sleeved fitted jumper with brown suede high heel boots.I am going to get a little gold/cream sequin scarf to wrap round neck to balance out outfit when jacket comes off.

Think it sounds ok.Based on the skirt really.Bargain in sales £130 - £20!!

Thank you all. Will ditch the nautical idea

I'm not really into skirts, they don't sit right on me as I have a short body/high waist so they tent to sit somewhere up around my boobs!

am going to trawl t'internet for a dressy top to go with black trousers I think.

Any other ideas welcome!
