cross-body bag - advice on which would be better quality

TempersFuggit · 29/10/2023 17:54

Hi there, I am toying with the idea of a proper grown up handbag. I usually buy from Oliver Bonas, or Zatchel, so not completely au fait with expensive bags, and only really need one to carry my phone, lipstick and keys. I like neat and un-blingy with lovely leather.

I really like this one from APC:
Mini Leather Demi-Lune Bag

and also this one from Mulberry:
Small Darley Satchel

Would both of these be good quality and wear well? Or can you advise if there are other brands I could be looking at that would fit the brief.

Thanks in advance :)

I LOVE the Mulberry bag.

How does this in any way fit the description of what type of bag the OP wants? And how do you know what the op already may or may not do for charity and how is that any of your business?

I know it's not really anything like the other two you linked.. but have you looked at Polene? I saw someone who takes apart bags review these and they said the craftsmanship was excellent and up there with the best most expensive bags.

I think they look beautiful and a good price but depends if you like the style.

I bought a polene bag after seeing my niece's work bags. They are such understated but beautifully crafted bags.

I’ve got a Mulberry (which now sits in its bag in my wardrobe). I actually have a lot of handbags but honestly, if it’s leather and well made and you love it, I don’t care about the brand, there’s plenty as mentioned above which are cheaper and as good. My Radley are just as good quality as the Mulberry, much cheaper (and apart from the shit Scotty dog) much more attractive and functional….And I can get them from the outlet.

buy what you love.

superninny101 · 30/10/2023 17:31

I have the APC one... and although I love the look of it, it is really a pain to use as you have to really dig in to find anything so I tend not to use it.

superninny101 · 30/10/2023 17:32

I think the Polene bag is actually much more interesting than either the APC and Mulberry. I also see both of the APC and Mulberry about and like that the Polene is rarer.

Calypsocuckoo · 30/10/2023 17:36

I have the Mulberry Darley and it is beautifully made and great quality. It fits in a surprising amount and I am fat and the strap is long enough on me, I would say go for that, it will last forever, and the Oxblood is a beautiful colour. It’s a small neat bag and fits in a phone, keys, tissues, make up etc but doesn’t get in the way as it still seems like a small bag, I use it as an evening bag.

Calypsocuckoo · 30/10/2023 17:36

Sorry don’t know why it is underlined !

Mamette · 30/10/2023 17:44

I bought the APC one but returned it. As PPs have said, it is difficult to get things in and out of it and for me, I felt it was too difficult to be able to use the bag.

Also the quality is only ok. IME Mulberry quality is better although I haven’t had a new Mulberry bag for many years now.

sunshinesupermum · 30/10/2023 17:58

The Mulberry one is lovely. They hold their value too.

ReadingIsFundamental · 30/10/2023 18:33

I have the APC Demi-lune and have barely used it since I bought it - similar to above posters it’s a pain to get a hand in and out of. The top of the bag can get mis-shapen too. I wouldn’t buy another and am thinking of selling the one I have as I don’t think I’ve used it for 2 years.

I don’t have a Mulberry Darley but I have a few other Mulberry bags and love them - they’re great quality and have worn really well.

hope you love whatever one you get!

KillingMeDeftly · 30/10/2023 18:40

I agree with the comments about the APC bag and the zip. I have a mini demi lune but it's not an everyday bag - the mini is also so small that it only fits my phone and a very small purse.

DramaAlpaca · 30/10/2023 18:46

I have a couple of Mulberry bags. The leather is really lovely and I'd recommend. I like Strathberry too as a brand, I also have a couple of those.

Love the Adolpho!

Massimo Dutti often have nice bags.

Agree with PP about mini Demi lune. Mine looks beautiful- love the colour depth and quality- but my small hand can barely fit in. It is painful to retrieve your cash card etc! You could try the bigger size- but I prefer the look of the smaller. Also scratches easily if not embossed leather.

However there are other apc bags that look more user friendly. Or you could go on an outlet section of an online site like Flannels and get a v cut price designer one. I bought the perfect (for me) small cross body bag there.
