Growing out a (hideous) pixie cut

Sonolanona · 29/10/2023 17:31

10 weeks ago I made a baaad decision and had my hair cut into a pixie.
God only knows why.. I've done it twice before as an adult and each time regretted it instantly Grin (worse, this time last year I'd just had my waist length hair cut to my shoulders so I've lost several feet long of hair in a year!)

It's taken me 10 weeks to be able to laugh about it..and of course now it's starting to get a mullet look. I want to grow it again, possibly keep a long fringe. Currently as (thank god) it was longer on top it's just heading into the 'I've joined a monastery' bowl look, with tiny flicky bits at the neck where it was shaved.

I have to straighten it or I turn into Ronald MacDonald !

At the end of Jan I am going to visit my son who lives on the other side of the world. I'm hoping enough to have some sort of style by then ..luckily my hair does grow fairly quickly.

Would you..just leave it totally until just before I go, or go and see if the hairdresser (a different one!) can shape it somehow. I really don't want a super short bob if I can help it!

Any suggestions welcomed!!

I pinned bits of mine up with hair grips and it looked quite good like that but it depends what you think of that.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 29/10/2023 17:36

Start getting the back cut straight across so the layers grow out. Like heading towards a bob.

SerpentEndBench · 29/10/2023 17:38

Can you get a bit of a quiff going? Agree get the back tidied.

Purpleavocado · 29/10/2023 17:44

I'd tidy the back and aim for a pixie bob. That's how I grew mine out, went to pixie bob, bob, and now it's shoulder length.

Emeraldsanddiamonds · 29/10/2023 17:44

I'd be leaving it to grow as long as possible before doing any reshaping. Unfortunately hair grows about 1/2 inch a month - I've seen very few exceptions to this having worked in a salon as a student. So you will have maybe an extra 1 and a half inches or maybe 2 inches if it really does grow fast.

I think most of us have been there with awful haircuts. It is frustrating having to wait for it to grow too. I remember a bob with a really heavy fringe. I knew when it was half cut that it was a very bad mistake. I didn't have the face for it or the right hair texture. It was awful growing it out because the fringe was so heavy and it looked kind of lumpy pinned back.

Seaside3 · 29/10/2023 18:03

I'd get it tided up, then look at ways to style it. Slicked back? Curl it, straighten it, pin it? Then see how you feel in January before rushing another cut.

MerryChristmasToYou · 29/10/2023 18:27

gel it into spikes

TheOGCCL · 29/10/2023 18:35

I'm sort of growing out a pixie cut and I would just leave it to grow for as long as possible so that the hairdresser has something to work with. That's one of the advantages of hacking all your hair off, it takes a while to grow and they can't do that for you so you can save some money.

I don't mind the growing out phase as you get a slightly different cut each time.

Would you consider a hair band, there are loads of nice ones around with a sort of forties vibe.

RandomNutter · 29/10/2023 18:40

I love miley cyrus' hair when she grew out her pixie cut.

It's been a while since I did this to myself but iirc I made use of a lot of scarves and hats! Think I had the back tidied once but I absolutely hate going to the hairdresser so dealt with it myself as much as I could.

MissChanandlerB0NG · 29/10/2023 19:03

Can you do some form of finger waves to make it look vintage. Add a headband or some lovely hair clips?

If it's not your style I do quite like the mullet look that's in

StamppotAndGravy · 29/10/2023 19:16

Do you have waves? If so little butterfly clips to take it off your face and get an the different length strands to stay back work well. If it's straight, you're probably going to need it tidied up a few times otherwise the layers will stick out. You have my sympathies. I'm just through the hobbit stage and into spaniel who needs a trim because it can't see out. I think I'm about a year away from that photo of Miley!

Blueggsandham · 29/10/2023 19:48

I'd wait as long as possible before going for another cut, and get some wax or styling creme so you can take a bit of control.

I've had two awful short haircuts too, don't know why I didn't learn from the first one! I tend to look like a pre-pubescent boy when I get it done.

RaisinsOfMildAnnoyance · 29/10/2023 19:56

We must have been infected by the same pixie idea at the same time, because I'm growing out a short cut that still leaves me feeling depressed weeks and weeks later. I feel mannish and unattractive and I don't have the sharp and/or delicate facial features to pull off such an unforgiving cut. Mine was SO short I have to go get it shaped now because it flops about and I look like a car salesman on a windy day. No good. Can't wait for next winter when it's properly long enough to scrape back into a bunch.

Sonolanona · 29/10/2023 19:57

Thank you for all your suggestions!
I have neither striaght nor curly hair.. so a hint of damp and it turns into a frizzy mushroom unfortunately... my only saving grace is it's nice and thick!
I'm also a sad salt and pepper... I keep contempating colouring it again, but when it was long, the silver streaks were actually quite striking so I suspect I'd regret that too (and the upkeep!)

I don't wear headscarves (( work with children who have severely challenging behaviour and having been damn near garrotted with a necklace in the past, so don't wear anything that could be grabbed round my neck!) but out of work..I am wearing a lot of beanies!!

I think clips might be the way to go.. slicking it back would definitely frighten the kids Grin and maybe I'll just leave it until the end of January where with any luck there will be nearly 2 inches more.

And when (because I KNOW I will want to do it again) I come back here asking for nice short hair ideas... please tell me not to be stupid. I love short hair...but on me it looks awful.

Why not slick it back with gel into a pony then add a clip in pony tail / plait? No frizz abroad. Quick and simple. Trendy. Clip ins are not expensive.

SkaneTos · 29/10/2023 22:30

I am growing out a pixie cut right now, OP!
It has been 4 months, and my hair is very much in an in-between state right now. I want to go to the hairdresser and have it shaped somehow, but I have decided to hold out until January.
Until then I either

  • Pin it back with hair pins or hair clips, which makes me look like I am in a girl band in the late 90's, or
  • Use a headband, or
  • Ruffle my hair around. Right now it looks better when it's bit messy and not too combed.

I were you I would leave and let it grow until just before you are travelling. The hairdresser will have more hair to work with then.

Good Luck!

I’ve grown out a few pixels over the years and I recommend growing it out for as long as possible. Invest in some nice hats for winter. It’s a frustrating process though!
