Is box dye that bad? Sick of hairdressers..

Basically every hairdresser I go to either doesn't do what I asked for, cuts my hair too short, damages it, costs way too much or sometimes a combination of both.

The latest example of what I asked for vs. what I got in pics. Still waiting for a refund I was meant to get 2 weeks later.

Is box dye that bad? Thinking of just not having a salon colour done again for a few years!

Where are you based? As £100 for what you were looking for is ridiculously cheap so I’m not surprised she did such a a bad job.

Balayage together with the right base colour requires a colour specialist who is very experienced. I had the colour on the left done a couple of years ago, and paid a lot more than £100.

Also worth noting that the hair in the photo is a lot longer and thicker, so anyone who claims they can achieve that in your hair without extensions is lying.

I have to agree - I’m in the Midlands (so not London prices) and for basic base colour and I think quarter head highlights, 3 or 4 years ago (before I stopped dyeing my hair) I paid well over £150.

I’d expect the style on the left to be £300 at least and I may be massively undervaluing the skill needed and therefore the price.

However, that’s no excuse for the hairdresser who has an obligation to know what she can or can’t do to ‘give it a go’ and screw it up.

I’m sure they’re fine if you know what you’re doing with them. I used them in the second lockdown as I couldn’t let my roots ever get that bad again. DD applied it, she did ok, only a couple of missed patches. It was quite brassy but a toner on top fixed that.

it did take my hairdresser two visits to sort out the colour when they reopened again, to a standard I was 💯 happy with.

I’ve been cutting and colouring my hair since lockdown with ESalon. I get loads of compliments on it, even from hairdressers. Highly recommended.

@sunflowerfields88 Do you have a college nearby? Some of the best cut and colours I’ve ever had have been at training colleges.

If you go for box dye, I recommend Olio - a hairdresser suggested it to me, not stinky, leaves my hair in good shape and shiny, but one colour.

I also recommend Olia hair dye!

I think I'd be seriously considering getting quite a lot chopped off and a colour correction from a pro. I'd imagine the ends are damaged from the blonde and no amount of dye will make it look good.

Sadly the hairdresser hasn't even coloured the dark evenly, so it's not like you can have a bob and be done.

After chopping off as much blonde as possible I would wait and grow your hair out, let it recover before attempting another colour.

I use this on my mouse brown with grey, have done for years and it always seems to go on well. Even hairdressers have commented about it and how much it suits me. I let it grow out a bit sometimes and it still looks nice. It is due to be redone as I think I last did it about a year ago.

Hair dye

I lied, I use this one. I thought the other one didn't look familiar 🙄
Hair dye I actually use

If you use a box dye, use a tone-on-tone one

What is tone on tone hair dye, please?

TheSilentSister · 29/10/2023 22:53

OP - I remember your original post and although didn't comment, I thought it didn't look too bad. But now seeing your hair straight, I totally see what you mean.
@longtompot - that was really funny, just the sort of thing I do but don't own up to, lol.
@MerryChristmasToYou - what is tone on tone?
