Hair thin at front?

northernbird1988 · 27/10/2023 20:28

My hair used to be so long and thick, I had a thick, full fringe.
My eldest is 6 and it was thick up until he was about 18 months old, then I went through a short period of stress where I didn't eat much and it's never been the same since.
It shed in huge clumps. It's been cut shorter and shorter to make up for it being so thin.
But the worst is what was my fringe. It's so thin and when I tilt my head back I can see my scalp.
I'm 35. I had bloods and I was low in iron which they now say is at normal levels.
Has anyone got any advice please? Sorry the photos aren't great.

I lost my fringe, I was just told to take iron, it never grew back.

@DustyLee123 really? Was that after having kids?

Yep. It could be the start of peri for you. What age did your mum start ?

It’s thin-ish but nothing unusual. I can see you wouldn’t want it to continue though.

I’d ask the GP for your actual blood results, because they often say eg iron is normal - but in fact it is on the low end of normal.

Then I would go see a dermatologist specialising in hair and see what they suggest. A good tricologist can be good too.

When you say you lost hair, is it mostly along the hairline? Did you loose eyebrows and busy hair? Do you feel itchiness along the hairline? Go to a dermatologist don’t wait, GPs don’t know about these matters… I waited around 5 years… so I’m fine out and have Frontal fibrosing alopecia. Like you after a baby, followed by a lot of stress and peri menopause. It’s stable now but I lose a lot of hair. Go to a dermatologist, they’ll know, good luck!

I had similar OP and am also the same age as you.

I requested the actual numbers from my blood test results and found that actually my ferritin (stored iron) levels were still quite low. The NHS classed them as just within the normal range but according to the USA guidelines they weren’t.

I made a conscious effort to eat more red meat and protein and started taking iron tablets and the shedding seemed to stop 🤞 although I find it starts up again whenever I lose weight (I eat less when I’m stressed).
