Tops and leggings

Ok so I'm a bit fat (18 bottom & 20 top) and normally live in jeans.. Trying to change my eating habits but the change is making my IBS go crazy and the jeans are killing my stomach which is really sore. So..

Am I too big to wear leggings and bum covering tops/jumpers etc?

Do people still wear leggings and look ok?

Can any of you recommend some nice. Sweatshirts/jumpers etc or places to buy them that will go with leggings?

All I ever wear are jeans, sweatshirts and trainers so I'm a bit lost but the jeans are making me cry!!

Try jeggings instead you could go up a size to have a little bit more room

It seems like everyone lives in leggings(myself included) these days regardless of shape or size so go for it. I have about 20 pairs in all different colours.

Yes go for it. M and S do some good ones. I think they’re called Magic Shaper

No specific recommendations except to say that that jeans often have unforgiving waists and fabric and you absolutely shouldn't be in pain from your clothing.

I'm a very weird fit around the waist and what I do is look for any trousers, jogging bottoms, parachute or cargo pants, etc that have a combination of elastic and drawstring at the waist. And get a size that's comfortable in the midsection. The elastic/drawstring combo allows you to adjust how tight it is for comfort if your abdomen fluctuates a bit according to what you've eaten, bloating etc. while also ensuring the trousers stay on and don't fall down the minute you untie the drawstring. Some women's trousers have elastic that's far too heavy and tight though, so you need to experiment and try things on.

Leggings can sometimes be a bit tight at the waist I find but can be worn a bit lower around the hip area, or some may have a gentler elastic, and if you like them and they are comfortable for you then go for it. A casual, soft above the knee dress with a bit of shape to it, say in a jersey fabric, worn over leggings, can be nice looking and comfy too.

Of course you can wear them!

But (I digress, I’m good at that!), have you considered a total revolution and investing in some winter weight dresses? I live in dresses!

devuskums · 27/10/2023 08:51

@StarlightLady oooh please could you post a link of what you mean? I need winter dresses! Do you wear with thick tights?

PaperDoIIs · 27/10/2023 09:51

As long as they're thick/good quality and you don't wear them as trousers you'll be fine.

You can wear them with long jumpers (perfect weather for it) or tshirts/tshirt dresses/tunics. Or with a long line vest and then a tshirt/jumper/sweatshirt/shirt on top.

Not particularly stylish, but very comfortable.

Yes this absolutely is something people still wear, even fashion-y people! I would try on as many pairs of leggings as you can, maybe size up, because sometimes the waistbands aren't comfortable. They look good paired with a slightly oversized jumper, or a jumper dress, and some chunkier boots. I have digestive issues and horrible bloating too and sit down all day at work, and this is basically my winter uniform.

@devuskums - Most of my dresses come from spur of the moment sale purchases from independent shops, so links are a bit difficult. I also, as a courtesy to the OP, don’t want to derail the main subject of the thread.

l love the way you don’t have to consider what tops with what bottoms and lack of restriction. That is unless you are in the habit of doing cartwheels😂.

ln the winter, l tend to wear them with the Autograph Velvet seam free tights (no centre seam) in 40 or 60 denier. But for an evening the sheers come out. I prefer the bare leg season though.
