Vinted selling -cheaper sister site of Ebay or not?

Not maybe S&B but interested on comments!

I've a few bits to sell - good quality Boden, Mint Velvet, hardly worn- but the prices being asked on Vinted are so low (£5 for knitwear) it hardly seems worth the effort ( taking photos, loading, answering messages, taking to the post office etc and waiting a whole month for the payment.)

A few years ago I could make £100 quite easily on Ebay selling Boden, Jigsaw, etc. But Ebay commission is high and I don't think clothes are selling that well now.

Has anyone had any more positive experiences of Vinted where you've got a reasonable price for clothes? Or if you're a buyer, what price do you expect?

I've just opened a Vinted account and was also surprised prices are so low. I've sold my first Joules top and will see how it goes. I used to sell a lot on Ebay but like you found the commission and postage costs made it wasn't worthwhile. Interested in the replies.

ChaoticCrumble · 26/10/2023 08:15

EBay usually has 70-80% off fees offers every couple of weeks for established sellers so I used to wait for those. But Vinted just seems easier as you always get the full price an item sells for. Price depends on the brand. Lucy and yak always sells on there for me. Some stuff struggles because there is so much already. List at what you want to sell at and see what happens.

sunlovingcriminal · 26/10/2023 08:16

Vinted is really quick to use and upload. And there doesn't really seem to be any questions.
But you don't get much- but I've found it useful for volume of items!

OopsaDazy · 26/10/2023 08:17

Ebay commission is roughly 13%.

Just as an example, if I paid £60 for a Mint Velvet or Boden jumper, and it's hardly worn, I'd expect to get £10 at least.

I think branded items sell well for reasonable amounts.

Some people totally overprice their items which then hang around for ages. Greed really.

It's totally your prerogative - I would rather sell items and have ££ in pocket whilst contributing to sustainability.

Any items that would sell for less than £5- I charity every time.

Kids clothes don't sell well - I give these away.

OopsaDazy · 26/10/2023 08:20

I don't understand the 'favouriting' on Vinted!

I've listed a designer bag, unused, and I've had loads of people 'favouriting' it but no buyers or offers.

I suppose, being honest, I find it time consuming reading the emails coming in telling me it's been 'favourited' yet no one buys it!

I buy and sell a little on Vinted. Some items can take a few months to sell if I refuse to drop the price. The better the brand and with good photos and descriptions the better the price.

I have stopped notifications.

People favourite like eBay watching.

Many will then buy after a time.

Vinted is 1 million percent better than eBay IMO.

Wailywailywaily · 26/10/2023 08:25

When you favourite and item the seller gets notified, often the seller will send a note offering a discount on the item if they are looking for a quick sale. It can be a useful conversation starter.

The mysterious workings of Vinted!

Thanks.

I'd rather buyers just asked outright.

I sometimes favourite things if they are for my DS, for example coats I'll favourite a few and show him once he's home from school. Or I'll favourite whilst waiting for my own sales to go through and buy with the profits. I've sold items for a decent amount on vinted, pop them on and give it a few weeks, see what happens. I find vinted really handy.

RandomUsernameHere · 26/10/2023 08:30

I find Vinted so much quicker and easier to use than EBay that I'd happily sell items for less than I might get on EBay.
You can switch off the email notifications when someone favourites an item.

Brilliantlydone · 26/10/2023 08:32

I think you're more likely to sell if you have a few items available

Eg I wanted some knitted leggings (blade and rose) for the baby. Someone selling at £3 seems very fair to them, but add on buyers protection and delivery and I may as well just buy them new.

I do think prices on vinted are much lower than eBay but on the flip side you can quickly clear your items if your prices are right.

User98866 · 26/10/2023 08:34

Unfortunately vinted has driven down the price of really quality 2nd hand items. I’ve had to let some really lovely stuff go for next to nothing that a few years ago would have fetched a really decent price on eBay. I find on eBay you just don’t get the views anymore, plus the fees. I know stuff isn’t selling as I’ve been watching some items on eBay for months that haven’t shifted and they just keep getting reduced. I have been using vinted to sell stuff that no longer fits me so it’s either that or charity shop it and I’ve needed up with a good amount from it all but I think unless you’re selling a lot of items it’s hardly worth bothering.

Pleaseme · 26/10/2023 08:34

I like vinted. I mainly use it as a buyer. As a general rule I pay no more than £10 quid an item, stretched to £20 if I love it. Generally I sell kids stuff priced to sell, new looking sparkly pink, girls converse will go on at a fiver, t shirts a quid, trousers for £2. People often make a bundle and the lot disappears and I get twenty quid.

Barely seems worth it but I do the same so it’s s virtuous circle where clothes are reused 😇

User98866 · 26/10/2023 08:35

Oh yes vinted is 100x easier to use than eBay.

vdbfamily · 26/10/2023 08:43

My DD sells a lot on Vinted. She puts a lot of effort into how she presents what she is selling, usually by modelling them herself. She uses certain terms like vintage, fairy core, etc that seems to attract buyers and she starts with quite high prices, build up lots of favourites and then reduces price which seems message to ask those who have favourited. She only sells stuff that suits her so it is a certain style and her followers know that when she lists, it will be what they like so if she lists 8 things on a Saturday, she will often have sold half of them by end of day.
The good thing is that once you have made the effort to list it can just sit there indefinitely. You might not sell it for a year but it is still there and may be just what someone wants eventually.
If you are after quick money you may need to charge less or drop the price after a week or so.

OopsaDazy · 26/10/2023 08:45

Thanks for all the comments- really helpful.

I don't have a lot of clothes and the ones I buy are always mid-upper high st brands.

I think my plan now is to list at what I feel is a fair price (not stupidly high) and see how it goes.

I've been a clothing reseller for a few years and Vinted has helped tank the prices of the second hand market. Stuff like Boden, Mint Velvet etc is in abundance as you're now completing against people who don't mind selling items for a fiver.

You can still get good prices for items on eBay if the item is a bit more desirable, I.e something that stands out or has great material content for example.

But yeah in general, vinted is great for buyers and not so much for sellers these days.

jadey1991 · 26/10/2023 09:00

You can sell your items for however much you want on vinted.. I don't follow there recommendations

SootspriteSearcher · 26/10/2023 09:03

I've done really well on vinted as both a buyer and a seller. I list for a little above what I'm happy with to allow for offers. People love to haggle!

I have bundle discounts set up, but make sure you set them yourself as the automatic one is up to 50% off. Mine goes 5% off 2, 10% off 3, 15% off 5 or more. I've found I've sold quite a few bundles.

Sell a few each day rather than the whole lot at once, It makes your wardrobe more recent and more people see it.

Lots of clear photos and use words in the description & title people search for.

And when I have lots of favourites, I reduce. Often results in a sale particularly if I have lots of favourites on that item.

I've made over £2000 on vinted this year just by selling clothes, toys etc. Nothing particularly high end. Most expensive thing was a nintendo DS and games I listed.

I then used this to buy birthday & Christmas presents (and some in savings). I've got some great bargains and lovely items.

LovelyGreenCushions · 26/10/2023 09:10

Decent stuff gets decent prices on vinted- the same as ebay now as the bottom has fallen out of clothing

i list on both at the same time and same price. 99% sells on vinted and very little on ebay

List on vinted at 4, sold by 6 and in the inpost box by 8. No returns , no claims for non delivery

Bigmousestrikesagain · 26/10/2023 09:14

I agree that it often feels like
you are having to sell for a really low price on vinted - but I guess we just have to accept that’s what the market wants to pay. I try and look at it as being better than sitting in my wardrobe unworn.

I’ve found some brands on vinted sell really quickly - hush in particular. Oddly some of the more high end you can get great deals on as a buyer - perhaps because people don’t search for those names? I did sell soemthing recently on eBay because it was quite high end - that sold straight away but I did price to sell. I don’t think I would have got nearly as much on vinted. I actually also looked at selling it on vestaire but the fees there are really high and stuff doesn’t seem to shift.

mrsed1987 · 26/10/2023 09:15

I prefer vinter, find it easy to use. I've sold loads of kids clothes and shoes which I would have usually given to charity. Helps to go towards the new size!

Laurdo · 26/10/2023 09:17

I don't think everything sells cheap. Big brands do sell a bit higher. I got £40 for a ted baker jumpsuit.

And I've certainly paid over £10 for some things myself. I usually buy kids clothes.

It's worth sticking it on since it's free and if you don't get what you're looking for try another site.
