Alternatives to Barbour jackets for the busty and tallish

I had my heart set on a Barbour/Barbour International waxed jacket. A utilitarian style - there are a few - rather than a country style with big cord collar and patch pockets.

Having tried on several Barbour styles in a few suppliers (including their own brand shop on Beverley) over the last couple of weeks, I've realised that I am never going to find one to fit. They are very small and slim fitting! I'm normally a 16, but a Barbour 20 barely did up, and the styles I like stop at a 18!

Can anybody suggest any alternative wax jackets to look at? Budget is £300ish and I'd like a decent jacket that will takes years of use, rather than anything fashiony. (I have Boden wax jacket that is less than 5 years old and looking very tatty).

I live in the countryside and constantly look like I am about to go for a country walk. I have plenty of wellies, walking boots, fleeces and goretex jackets. A couple of times a week I need to smarten up and get a train to a city centre meeting (York, London, Birmingham) usually). I liked the idea of a Barbour because it would be weatherproof, looks pretty tidy and would segue nicely into my more rural out of work wardrobe. I also like that Barbours are made in the UK and can be refurbished.

TIA

I'm familiar with Celtic. They're actually top of my list of alternatives. My sheepskin boots are 12 years old!

Do you know what their coat sizing is like ?

I'm busty and tall and have one that's navy blue with a purple lining. I love it. The size 16 fits me even though I'm near an 18 up top..I got it for £70 at an outlet shop.

A Barbour? What style did you get? Because I've tried on about 20 recently !

I'm away from home but when I get home later I'll post the style. Or a picture. I can't find it online!

Sorry don't know about coat sizing - I was trying on skirts which were all far too long as I'm a shortie!

nameXname · 24/10/2023 15:29

I know this sounds odd, but have you tried on any of the Barbour men's jackets? One or two of the classic waxed styles - eg the Beaufort - might be suitable.

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2023 15:37

Same as @nameXname , try a man's coat, and Barbour not Barbour International. I have a Beaufort but you could also try Bedale. The Beadnell looked silly on me, too fitted, short and snug.

BrandNewBicep · 24/10/2023 15:43

I'm the same size as you and busty and have the Beadnell which looks good. Don't know if you tried that one. I would say Barbour International is slightly smaller and more fitted in their cuts.

bingohandjob · 24/10/2023 17:17

Barbour have a range of fits - worth checking the styles your looking at and the fit they are https://www.barbour.com/uk/womens-size-fit-guide I say this as I spent an afternoon with a friend trying on Barbours from a whole range and I could comfortably fit into FIVE different sizes! I ended up with a Stoneleigh that was a dress size down from my usual and very comfortably fit my generous bust!

Here's a (bad) picture of mine. I'm a size 18 and a 16 fits like a charm. I am also top heavy.

I can't find the style name. But if anyone knows perhaps they can add it here.

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2023 19:15

It will probably be on a label in the inside pocket

Gellhell · 24/10/2023 19:25

@KirstenBlest thanks! It Abrosa. Size 16 navy with purple lining.

Auntpodder · 24/10/2023 19:27

This Plumo coat is waxed but is a coat rather than a jacket (there's a grey one too) https://www.plumo.com/products/Yorkshire-coat.html

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2023 19:36

You are welcome, @Gellhell , you can probably tell how I know. I have two barbours. one a beaufort men's with a hood and a woman's lightweight utility jacket, which is fitted and shorter, more like a biker jacket than a parka.

I like the look of yours.

nameXname · 24/10/2023 19:54

Sorry to be so nerdy, but AFAIK the Arbrosa is a 'variety' of Beadnell, if that helps anyone.

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2023 20:30

Not nerdy at all. I was aware of it once I'd searched but neglected to mention it.
Thanks for the update.

I've got a Barbour Beadnell but had to get a size 22 to cover my arms..... I'm a size 18/20 usually. I do have to say that I live in it for walking the dogs/work as the mud just wipes off but you do need a fleece underneath on cold days as it's not cosy. The outlet at Bicester is very good for the ranges it has. I got a parka style from there recently, which I managed to get in a 16 and it's a perfect fit, so you do need to try several types.

Welligogs do beautiful wax jackets, they're next on my list to try. www.welligogs.com

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/10/2023 20:48

Drizabones are also good but more of a long coat.

I have. To fit round the hips, the shoulders are huge.

I have now discovered the different furs, thank you @bingohandjob z I wonder why none of the 3 shops I went to mentioned this (including one of their own shops, and their biggest stockist in Derbyshire!). There may be hope.
