Help please - what's the coat weather in London this week?

I now WFH oop north, but I'm going into the London office tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday. What kind of coat do I need to wear?

It looks rainy, so I'll be limiting my options to more practical things rather than wool coats.

Up here I've now moved from light coats, raincoats, and jackets to my Seasalt Janelle - is this the right kind of coverage for London too, or is it not feeling quite as cold down there yet?

Was in London yesterday and it wasn't yet cold so I think you'll be fine with a light coat and a warm layer underneath unless you are spending a lot of time outside.

TakeMe2Insanity · 24/10/2023 09:16

It’s not cold here (and definitely not by northern standards). It is definitely wet and damp, so waterproof with hood rather than wool coat.

We’re wearing tshirt, sweatshirt and a waterproof coat.

Really helpful, thank you both! I'll look at the raincoats I have then, I think.

@Clotheshorses - only outside time is commuting, so mainly sitting in meetings/office all day. (I know, what fun! 😁)

@TakeMe2Insanity - waterproof is something I can do! Thank you.

And I guess probably best to go with boots rather than light weight flats.

Cord dress + tights + boots + raincoat it is.

Light coat or raincoat is fine. I live in central London and haven't even got a coat out yet. I just occasionally use an umbrella. It's definitely not Northern weather. Central London is usually a couple of degrees warmer than outer London.

Have a good trip!

I’ve got a light wool coat which I’m wearing out but probably don’t need it, it’s been more rainy than cold.

Are you using the tube and how far outside will you have to walk?

The tube is always hot and stuffy and I prefer to make a quick dash in the cold/wet rather than wear a warm coat on the tube, particularly if it's more than just a few stops. It can be awful in rush hour.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/10/2023 11:47

I love the way you talk about your coat progression: in London I just don’t really even think about it unless it’s actively raining. We clearly miss out on that connection with the seasons.

HappiDaze · 24/10/2023 12:15

Not cold enough for coats especially if you're walking around. A cardi and a pac a Mac in case it rains

caramond · 24/10/2023 12:26

I've mostly worn my showerproof trench coat these past two weeks.

God, I hate the Tube. For exactly these reasons, among others. There's a very slightly longer route using the Thameslink, which I MUCH prefer to do.

Hmmm...interesting some people saying just a cardigan or jacket will work.

I think I'll take a raincoat. Thinking about it, I actually like the use of all the pockets with something like a raincoat, so I think I'll feel more comfortable wearing one. I'll make sure it's lightweight!
