Comfortable boots for walking

Looking for boots for teenage DD, she has ASD and hypermobility so needs something supportive and ideally nothing with those hooks on as she knocks her feet together and the laces get caught in them causing her to trip. We walk a lot at the weekends, not really long distances but in wood land and muddy areas. At the moment she wears my north face boots but they have the dreaded hooks on them and aren’t really that supportive. Can any one recommend a good pair of boots (not DM’s).

I think you need to take her to a big outdoor gear shop or a very big sports shop (decathlon would be fine) and try some on. Supportive is dependent on foot shape.

Apart from the hooks - which these do have. I have Hoka walking boots - they are lightweight and super cushioned. And by far the most like walking on air walking boots I have ever had.

You do need to go up a size on your usual size.

I wear Adidas gore tex. They are like the pp picture. They look like trainers, but are sturdier and waterproof.

Thank you, I will take her somewhere to try some on though she has a habit of saying they are comfy until we get them home. They do need to be boots as we walk through mud often up to the ankle so ideally water proof too. The north face ones she wears are like fur lined muck boots but she does struggle to walk in them as they are quite heavy and bulky.

Blundstone boots are nice, the have some that are fully waterproof

Lovemusic82 · 24/10/2023 08:18

And she needs boots due to her ankles being bendy. She doesn’t walk well in trainers even though she lives in trainers when she’s at college.

I hike a lot and these are the lightest boots I have ever worn. They do have hooks though.

Salomon

Edit they're waterproof too.

Depends on where you are walking
Timberland waterproof. I'd look at non suede
Kickers kick hi for town (I have sparkling patent ones)

Timberlands don't generally have hook and eye.

CaptainBarnaclesandthevegemals · 24/10/2023 08:25

You could try classic timberlands 6 eye boots. There are better walking boots out there, but they would cope fine with day walks in the woods. You can get waterproof ones. And that style doesn’t have speedlace hooks on the top, just eyelets, but comes up high enough to hold her ankles in. They are much lighter than Doc Martens even if they are now more of a fashion boot than a dedicated walking boot.

dicedicebaby · 24/10/2023 08:30

I'd take her to Cotswold outdoors, they have a good variety and do a fitting service.

Timberland boots might be an option, we have an outlet store near us so I could take her to try some on. I did find these when googling https://www.wynsors.com/products/karrimor-edmonton-01a4841?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw1t2pBhAFEiwA_-A-NIkVx8r6iExSMB_w8EmXy_CCXfAcvyTWrxk3l7td9b30AsBPxr4gUhoC8NgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds which could be an option, I think sports direct sell them so she could go and try them on. I think we will have to go shopping and try on a few different ones.

Nike do some decent waterproof boot / trainers. Look under men's

Lovemusic82 · 24/10/2023 15:08

Thank you, I will look at Nike too as she wears Nike trainers. She won’t fit men’s size though as she’s a 5 and I think they start at a 6?

I was very sad to say goodbye to my Teva boots recently - I wore them to death! Camping, walking, festivals,b dog walking - super comfortable and were properly waterproof until the last six months (they took such a battering!). There are some available here without hook fastenings - https://www.teva-eu.com/en/gb/women-boots/?sz=27 I think they sometimes have very good deals on Sportpursuit too.
